Frequently Asked Questions – Technician Agricultural Equipment Jobs Worcester 2026

What does N2 Qualified Technician mean and which subjects qualify? An N2 is a National Certificate issued by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) through the TVET college system — typically completed after Grade 9 or as part of a trade apprenticeship programme. For a mechanical technician role like this, the relevant N2 subjects include Engineering Science, Mathematics, Diesel Trade Theory, Motor Trade Theory, Fitting and Machining Theory, or related technical subjects. An N2 certificate plus a recognised trade test or apprenticeship is the standard minimum qualification for skilled workshop technician posts in South Africa’s agricultural equipment sector.

Does “3 years including apprenticeship” mean I must have completed a full trade test? The requirement states 3 years’ relevant experience including training as an Apprentice — meaning your 3 years must include time spent in a formal apprenticeship training programme, not only open employment. A completed trade test is advantageous but the requirement as stated focuses on the apprenticeship training component and the total years of relevant tractor and equipment repair experience. Candidates who have completed a trade test and hold a trade certificate will be preferred — contact AFGRI HR directly if you need clarification on whether your specific qualifications and experience meet the requirement.

What types of tractors and equipment will I be working on at Worcester? AFGRI’s Worcester branch serves the Breede River Valley farming community — where the primary equipment types include agricultural tractors (from brands such as John Deere, Massey Ferguson, New Holland, and Case IH), implements (tillage, planting, harvesting equipment), sprayers, and related agricultural machinery. Candidates with experience on any of these brands and equipment types — particularly tractors and their mechanical, diesel, hydraulic, and electrical systems — are well suited for this post.

Will I only work in the workshop or will there be field service work? This role involves both workshop-based repairs and field service calls at customer farms and agricultural operations in and around the Worcester and Breede River Valley area. The willingness to work in hot and outdoor locations is listed as a behavioural competency because field service in the Western Cape’s summer heat on working farms is a regular part of the job. A valid driver’s licence is essential for this reason.

What does updating a job card involve and why is it important? A job card is the technical and administrative record of every repair or maintenance job — capturing the customer’s details, the equipment description, the fault description, all diagnostic steps taken, all work performed, all parts used, and the time spent. Accurate job cards are essential because they drive invoicing accuracy, warranty claims, workshop productivity measurement, and parts stock management. Technicians who keep poor job card records create downstream problems across the entire workshop operation — accuracy and timeliness in job card updating is a core KPI for this role.

What does the EE position designation mean for my application? An EE (Employment Equity) position means AFGRI will fill this vacancy in accordance with their Employment Equity Plan — giving preference to qualifying candidates from designated groups (African, Coloured, and Indian South Africans, and persons with disabilities) as required under the Employment Equity Act. All technically qualifying candidates are encouraged to apply — the EE designation means the appointment decision will take employment equity targets into account alongside technical qualifications and experience.
