The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) has re-advertised nine (9) permanent public service vacancies for Supervisor: Cleaning Services based at the Pretoria Regional Office.
This position carries a salary of R201 093 per annum (Salary Level 4), plus standard public sector benefits. The minimum educational requirement is a Grade 9 / ABET Level 4, while two (2) years of relevant cleaning service environment experience will serve as an added advantage. The successful candidates will supervise cleaning, housekeeping, and maintenance services, oversee equipment and materials, enforce Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards, and handle basic staff administration.

Key Performance Areas & Duties

The appointed Supervisors will oversee general cleaning operations, hygiene compliance, equipment maintenance, and staff supervision:

Housekeeping & Operational Supervision

  • Supervise the provision of housekeeping, cleaning, safeguarding, and maintenance services across allocated departmental offices and buildings.
  • Perform physical inspections of cleaned areas to maintain cleanliness, tidiness, hygiene, and overall safety standards.
  • Ensure the proper collection and removal of refuse inside offices and around building premises.
  • Identify fire, electrical, and general hazards within offices and ensure full adherence to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) guidelines.

Equipment & Material Control

  • Manage, inventory, and control cleaning equipment and consumable materials.
  • Identify resource requirements and special operational needs for allocated cleaning teams.
  • Monitor the condition and functional availability of all machinery and tools, ensuring prompt repair or replacement of faulty or outdated equipment.

Section Administration & Staff Supervision

  • Perform administrative functions linked to housekeeping, cleaning services, and record management.
  • Assist with staff attendance, timekeeping, and the maintenance of discipline within the section.
  • Support human resource administrative processes, conduct employee performance reviews, and identify staff development and training needs.

Minimum Requirements & Competencies

Qualifications & Experience

  • Grade 9 / ABET Level 4 as a minimum educational requirement.
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ relevant experience in a cleaning service environment will serve as an added advantage.

Technical Knowledge

  • Basic knowledge of professional cleaning techniques and office administration protocols.
  • Practical understanding of operating industrial cleaning machinery and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, general personnel practices, and the Labour Relations Act (LRA).

Required Skills & Personal Attributes

  • Communication: Effective verbal and written communication skills across various operational levels.
  • Supervisory & Interpersonal: Strong relationship management, interpersonal, diplomacy, conflict resolution, and motivational skills.
  • Analytical & Operational: Practical numeracy, strong observational abilities, problem-solving, decision-making, and analytical thinking.
