The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) has re-advertised ten (10) permanent public service vacancies for Boiler Operator: Workshop based at the Pretoria Regional Office.
This position carries a salary of R201 093 per annum (Salary Level 4), plus standard public sector benefits. Key Performance Areas & Duties
The appointed Boiler Operators will manage workshop steam operations, water chemistry, pressure monitoring, and plant safety:
Chemical & Water Quality Management
-
Request and manage water treatment chemicals from stores as required.

Test the water quality of softeners and monitor returning flows of condensate water.

Fill chemical tanks with prescribed solutions, top up salt in brine tanks, and verify chemical pump conditions.

Conduct Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) testing and perform boiler blow-downs strictly according to prescripts.
Pressure Monitoring & Operational Adjustments

Monitor steam pressure constantly in accordance with operational demand.

Check and verify the correct operating temperatures of hot well pumps.

Adjust stokers for efficient steam delivery and report all operational defects immediately.
Water Level, Fuel & Plant Maintenance

Check feed water pumps, water levels, and hot well tanks to guarantee sufficient water supply to the boiler.

Ensure standby boilers and funnels remain full of water and treatment chemicals at all times.

Control the flow of fuel and oversee ash removal from boilers, grit arresters, and smoke boxes.

Maintain a clean, organized boiler environment while ensuring full compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act.
Minimum Requirements & Competencies
Qualifications & Experience

A minimum of Grade 10 (or equivalent).

An equivalent recognized national steam certificate.

A minimum of one (1) year of experience in the boiler operation field will serve as an added advantage.
Technical Knowledge

In-depth knowledge of boiler operation procedures and equipment maintenance.

Practical understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act.

Familiarity with workshop tools, materials, and the general built environment.
