Frequently Asked Questions – Safety Officer OHS Jobs Centurion Gauteng 2026
What is SAMTRAC and why is it required for this Safety Officer post? SAMTRAC (Safety Management Training Course) is South Africa’s most widely recognised occupational health and safety management qualification — issued by NOSA (National Occupational Safety Association). It covers safety legislation, hazard identification, risk assessment, incident investigation, and OHS management systems — and is the benchmark entry-level qualification for professional Safety Officers in South Africa. SAMTRAC is listed as an essential, non-negotiable requirement for this AFGRI Safety Officer post — candidates without it will not be shortlisted regardless of their years of safety experience.
What is Incident Investigation Level 3 and what does it involve? Incident Investigation Level 3 is an accredited qualification covering the advanced investigation of workplace incidents — including root cause analysis methodologies (such as ICAM, TapRoot, or Bowtie), evidence collection, witness interviewing, contributing factor analysis, and the preparation of comprehensive investigation reports with corrective and preventive action recommendations. Level 3 covers complex, multi-causal incidents — as opposed to Level 1 (basic) and Level 2 (intermediate) investigations. It is essential for a Safety Officer managing multiple grain facilities where incidents may involve serious injuries, explosions, fumigant exposure, or rail accidents.
What is a Fumigation Certificate and why is it specifically required for grain safety? A Fumigation Certificate is an accredited qualification authorising the holder to plan, supervise, and conduct fumigation operations for stored grain using registered fumigants such as phosphine (PH3). Fumigation is a critical and legally regulated pest control method in grain storage — phosphine is a highly toxic gas that poses serious risks to human health and requires strict safety protocols, atmospheric monitoring, confined space procedures, and regulatory notification. As Safety Officer for AFGRI’s grain facilities, you will oversee fumigation safety compliance — making the Fumigation Certificate a non-negotiable legal and operational requirement.
What does up to 70% travel mean in practice for this role? 70% travel means approximately 3–4 days per working week may be spent visiting AFGRI Grain facilities across South Africa — including silos, grain storage depots, handling facilities, and rail loading points in provinces such as Gauteng, North West, Free State, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo. You will be based at AFGRI’s Centurion offices when not travelling. A valid driver’s licence is essential and candidates must be genuinely comfortable with extended periods of travel — including overnight stays at facilities in rural and semi-rural locations. Strong planning skills are critical to managing the inspection schedule efficiently across the national network.
What is SHERQ and how is it different from OHS? SHERQ stands for Safety, Health, Environment, Risk, and Quality — a broader integrated management framework that extends beyond the OHS Act’s minimum legal requirements to include environmental management, food quality systems, and enterprise risk management. OHS is one component of the SHERQ framework. As AFGRI’s Safety Officer, you will apply SHERQ principles across all grain facilities — ensuring that safety, environmental, food safety, and quality systems are integrated, documented, and audit-ready at all times.
What does rail safety involve at AFGRI grain facilities? Several AFGRI grain facilities are served by rail — with grain loaded into and off-loaded from rail wagons as part of the storage and logistics operation. Rail safety in this context covers the safe conduct of shunting and loading operations, rail worker safety protocols, compliance with the National Railway Safety Regulator (NRSR) requirements, and the maintenance of rail-related safety documentation and incident reporting. Candidates with prior experience in rail-adjacent agricultural or industrial environments will have an advantage in this aspect of the role.
