What Does a Dis-Chem Pharmacist Do?
A Pharmacist at Dis-Chem is responsible for the full provision of pharmaceutical care — taking responsibility for patients’ medicine-related needs and being accountable for meeting those needs across the dispensary, self-medication counter and frontshop. You will dispense medication, counsel patients, supervise dispensary staff, manage stock and ensure full compliance with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) regulations and Dis-Chem’s operating procedures.
This is a professional, patient-centred role that demands clinical knowledge, strong communication skills and the leadership ability to guide and develop junior dispensary staff — all within a fast-paced retail pharmacy environment.
Key Responsibilities of a Pharmacist
Pharmaceutical Care & Dispensing
- Evaluate patients’ medicine-related needs by determining the indication, safety and effectiveness of their therapy.
- Dispense medicines and scheduled substances on valid prescriptions from authorised prescribers.
- Sign off and check all prescriptions prepared by assistants or interns, accepting full accountability for correctness as per GPP 2.7.1.2.1.f.
- Provide pharmacist-initiated therapy where applicable.
- Furnish accurate information and advice to patients regarding the correct use of their medication.
- Determine patient compliance with therapy and follow up to ensure medicine-related needs are being met.
- Accurately interpret scripts and act in a professional, responsible manner within SAPC legal requirements.
- Provide accurate instructions to patients regarding the correct use of supplied medicine.
Compounding, Manufacturing & Stock Management
- Perform or supervise the compounding, manipulation, preparation and packaging of medicines and scheduled substances.
- Oversee the purchasing, storage, packaging, re-packaging, supplying and selling of medicines and scheduled substances in compliance with the Medicines Act and Pharmacy Act.
- Ensure accurate picking, packing, labelling and checking of medication with awareness of common dosages and critical drug interactions.
- Report on low or out-of-stock levels and stock errors to the Dispensary Manager.
- Facilitate bi-annual stock takes and exercise stock, cash and asset control.
Medical Aid & Claims Administration
- Capture script details accurately and verify patient details on the system.
- Keep abreast of changes in medical aid procedures and dispensing requirements for claims.
- Process all paperwork required for accurate submission of medical aid claims.
- Correct errors on scripts rejected by medical aid.
- Ensure authorisation of chronic, HIV and AIDS and oncology medication.
- Explain all medical aid costs to patients clearly and transparently.
Patient Profiles & Customer Service
- Maintain and update customer profiles on the system; notify Vexall to merge profiles centrally where required.
- Take note of messages on customer profiles and take suitable action.
- Advise and assist patients at the dispensary, self-medication counter and frontshop.
- Evaluate disease conditions and refer patients to in-store health facilities when necessary.
- Follow up with patients regarding script tracking reports and follow-up appointments as requested.
- Follow through on all promises made to customers.
Team Leadership & Compliance
- Assist the Dispensary Manager in ensuring all administration functions are carried out correctly and timeously.
- Assist in ensuring all stock control processes are adhered to and all registers are kept up to date per legislation.
- Adhere to all Dis-Chem policies, procedures, SOPs, health and safety rules and uniform policy.
- Maintain housekeeping standards in accordance with Dis-Chem requirements.
Minimum Requirements – Pharmacist
To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Educational Qualifications
- Grade 12 / Matric certificate (essential)
- BPharm degree or equivalent qualification (essential)
- Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) (essential)
Experience
- Minimum 2–3 years’ experience in pharmaceutical practice (essential)
- Minimum 2–3 years’ retail pharmacy experience, including student/intern experience (essential)
Skills & Competencies
- Computer literate — MS Office (essential)
- Strong command of English and a second language — read, write and speak
- Good communication and active listening skills
- Knowledge of basic dosing and important drug interactions
- Strong customer service and patient-focused approach
- Supervisory experience with the ability to lead by example
- Ability to train other staff members
- Conflict management skills
- Strong attention to detail and sound numerical skills
- Problem-solving ability and ability to work under pressure
- Trustworthy, honest and punctual team player
Special Conditions
- Must be registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC)

- Physically fit and able to stand for long periods
- Comfortable working in controlled room temperature, security-sensitive and limited-space environments with risk stock
