What Does a Cosmetic Frontshop Assistant Do?
A Cosmetic Frontshop Assistant at Dis-Chem is responsible for upholding the merchandising standards of the beauty department while supporting customer service at point of sale. You will ensure shelves are fully stocked, neatly presented and compliant with planograms, process customer transactions accurately, and provide friendly, knowledgeable assistance to every customer who visits the cosmetics section.
This is a hands-on, dual-function role that combines visual merchandising and stock management with frontshop customer service and cash handling — ideal for someone who loves beauty products and thrives in a fast-paced retail environment.
Key Responsibilities of a Cosmetic Frontshop Assistant
Merchandising & Shelf Management
- Ensure full ranges of cosmetic products are always on the shelves and neatly presented.
- Restock merchandise as needed to ensure maximum sales at all times.
- Store and pack all delivered stock or stock pulled from the storeroom in the correct space immediately.
- Maintain shelves to ensure no products have reached their sell-by date.
- Ensure all merchandising and displays comply with Dis-Chem planogram standards and category guidelines.
Customer Service
- Provide friendly, helpful and courteous assistance and advice to all customers.
- Follow up all out-of-stock queries from customers using the customer service out-of-stock list.
- Support the cosmetics department with product knowledge, promotions and personal selling.
Point of Sale & Cash Handling
- Be responsible for accurate cash flow at point of sale.
- Transact all purchases — receive and process all accepted payment methods including cash, cards, vouchers, coupons and other forms of payment.
- Ensure all line voids and price changes are approved and signed off by a supervisor before processing.
- Exchange merchandise and accept returned goods when authorised to do so.
- Place cash in the drop safe in accordance with Dis-Chem’s SOPs.
- Be alert and verify all payments according to Dis-Chem’s verification procedure.
- Ensure all outgoing stock and items are scanned and paid for.
- Ensure your till code and password are restricted to you, kept secure and changed regularly.
Compliance & Security
- Adhere to all Dis-Chem policies, standard operating procedures, and health and safety rules and regulations.
- Adhere to all Dis-Chem security policies and procedures at all times.
Minimum Requirements – Cosmetic Frontshop Assistant
To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Educational Qualifications
- Grade 12 / Matric certificate (essential)
- Certification in Retail or a related field (essential)
Experience
- Minimum 0–6 months’ retail experience (essential)
- Minimum 1 year’s experience within a retail cosmetics environment (essential)
Skills & Competencies
- Computer literate — MS Office (essential)
- Strong command of English — speak, read and write
- Knowledge of merchandising standards and the FMCG industry
- Ability to work with planograms and category management principles
- Understanding of promotions, personal selling, sales targets, customer liaison and product knowledge
- Sound numerical skills — addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
- Customer-oriented with strong attention to detail
- Emotional intelligence, accountability and problem-solving ability
- Trustworthy, honest and punctual
