Purpose of the Job
The General Assistant is responsible for ensuring excellent customer service, proper merchandising, accurate shelf labelling, and general housekeeping within the store.
This role ensures that the store is clean, well-stocked, safe, and customer-friendly at all times.
Key Responsibilities of a General Assistant
Customer Service
- Assist and advise customers on products and store queries
- Provide friendly and helpful service at all times
- Resolve customer complaints where possible or escalate when needed
- Ensure customers feel welcomed and supported
Merchandising & Stock Display
- Ensure shelves are fully stocked and neatly presented
- Follow store layout plans and planograms
- Merchandise bulk stock safely and correctly
- Restock products immediately after delivery or handling
- Ensure correct product visibility for customers
Housekeeping & Store Cleanliness
- Keep aisles clean, safe, and free from obstacles
- Ensure customers can move through the store safely
- Maintain cleanliness in assigned areas at all times
- Ensure correct shelf labelling and pricing display
- Complete assigned cleaning checklists (canteen, toilets, etc.)
Health & Safety (OHSA Compliance)
- Follow all Occupational Health and Safety (OHSA) rules
- Ensure safe merchandising of stock in racking and shelves
- Report safety hazards or risks to the Store Manager immediately
- Ensure customers and staff are protected from injury risks
Stock Control & Loss Prevention
- Report damaged or expired stock to management
- Assist in reducing stock loss and wastage
- Ensure stock is handled correctly during merchandising
- Maintain awareness of stock movement in assigned areas
Minimum Requirements – General Assistant
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the following:
Education:
- Grade 10 / NQF Level 3 with 1 year experience
OR - Grade 12 with no experience required
Additional Requirements:
- Valid South African ID or work permit
- Ability to communicate in English and local language
- Basic numerical and calculation ability
- Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays
- Ability to work under pressure
