Purpose of the Job
The Cashier is responsible for the accurate handling of all Point of Sale (POS) transactions, ensuring that all goods are properly scanned and paid for while delivering excellent customer service.
The role plays a critical part in preventing stock loss, maintaining cash accuracy, and ensuring a smooth and efficient checkout experience for customers.
Key Responsibilities of a Cashier
Cash Handling & POS Transactions
- Ensure all cash, floats, and petty cash balance accurately (no shortages or overs)
- Accurately capture all goods on the Point of Sale (POS) system
- Process correct payment types (cash, card, vouchers, etc.)
- Ensure sufficient change is available at all times
- Perform accurate cash-ups at the end of each shift
- Ensure all takings are securely dropped into the cash vault/safe
- Process transactions for other stores, deliveries, and quotes correctly
Customer Service
- Provide fast, friendly, and efficient service to all customers
- Assist customers during checkout and ensure a smooth experience
- Direct customers to the correct staff or department when needed
- Maintain a professional and helpful attitude at all times
- Follow company dress code and presentation standards
Administration Duties
- Sign, compile, and file all cashier-related documentation
- Maintain accurate transaction records
- Ensure all paperwork is completed correctly and stored securely
Security & Loss Prevention
- Ensure no goods leave the store without being paid for
- Follow strict cash handling and POS password control procedures
- Secure all cash according to company safety standards
- Report any suspicious behaviour or discrepancies to management
Health & Safety (OHSA Compliance)
- Follow all Occupational Health and Safety (OHSA) procedures
- Ensure safety of customers and staff within the checkout area
- Report hazards or risks immediately to the Store Manager
Minimum Requirements – Cashier
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the following:
Education:
- Grade 12 (Matric) OR
- Minimum 1 year relevant cashier or retail experience
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong numerical and basic calculation ability
- Good communication skills in English and local language
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
