Job Context & Fleet Logistics Environment

Navigating an ultra-heavy articulated truck through Gauteng’s freight infrastructure requires an exceptional driver who balances precise mechanical control with analytical road planning. Rainbow Rustenburg’s consumer division distributes critical commercial products across a broad national and provincial client base. Operating from the central hub in Centurion allows the fleet to reach industrial corridors effectively, but it also demands total familiarity with high-density traffic networks, toll route procedures, and varying regional weather challenges.

As an Ultra-heavy Motor Vehicle Driver, you are the face of the brand at every delivery point. The role requires far more than basic driving skills; it demands strict compliance with the National Road Traffic Act, an understanding of complex vehicle loading configurations, and a dedication to reducing vehicle operating costs through fuel-efficient driving habits.

Operational Flexibility Notice: Due to optimized supply chain timelines, the distribution fleet runs around the clock. The successful applicant must be fully prepared to work irregular shifts, night routes, weekends, and public holidays as required by delivery schedules.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Heavy Fleet Operation & Pre-Trip Diagnostics

  • Prepare heavy-duty transport rigs for regional and long-haul trips by conducting exhaustive, step-by-step pre-trip safety audits.

  • Inspect primary vehicle components, including hydraulic lines, dual-braking networks, coupling points, tires, and emergency equipment (such as commercial fire extinguishers).

  • Drive ultra-heavy articulated vehicles and interlink combinations defensively, minimizing wear and tear on engine components and maximizing fuel efficiency.

  • Report any vehicle defects, mechanical system drops, or road emergencies immediately to the fleet management workshop using standard company reporting channels.

2. Cargo Management, Securing & Offloading

  • Supervise or execute vehicle loading techniques to ensure weight distribution across all axles aligns with the legal limits of the National Road Traffic Act.

  • Guarantee the absolute security of all consumer goods before starting any transit route, taking responsibility for opening and closing heavy tarpaulins when required.

  • Manage the delivery discharge process on-site by safely operating specialized mechanical offloading machinery or overseeing client-side warehouse teams.

  • Maintain an unblemished transit track record, eliminating inventory loss, moisture damage, or transit shifting.

3. Supply Chain Administration & Housekeeping

  • Handle all mandatory transport paperwork accurately, including trip logbooks, delivery manifests, fuel receipts, and proof of delivery (POD) notes.

  • Obtain customer verification signatures, company stamps, and delivery acknowledgments cleanly and professionally.

  • Maintain the interior hygiene and presentation of the corporate vehicle, while showing a disciplined personal commitment to wearing the correct uniform and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.

  • Adhere to and promote all company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and risk containment guidelines.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

Licensing & Regulatory Compliance

  • Must possess a valid, active South African Code EC Driver’s License (formerly Code 14) with zero active structural suspensions or traffic endorsements.

  • Must hold a valid, active Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) with an explicit DGP (Dangerous Goods Permit) classification code.

  • Must be 25 years of age or older to align with internal fleet risk insurance profiles.

Academic & Experience Parameters

  • Successful completion of Grade 12 / Matric / Senior Certificate or equivalent NQF Level 4 education.

  • Must possess a minimum of a Grade 10 Literacy Level (demonstrating clear verbal and numerical literacy to perform basic load calculations and read delivery manifests).

  • A minimum of 3 years of continuous, verifiable experience driving ultra-heavy commercial motor vehicles or heavy articulated combinations.

Technical Skills & Attributes

  • Complete mastery of advanced defensive driving methodologies and heavy vehicle loading principles.

  • Practical understanding of the location, function, and behavioral patterns of core vehicle parts.

  • Clean criminal record and an unblemished professional driving history.

Mandatory Pre-Onboarding Screenings

Due to corporate risk policies and occupational health guidelines, any candidate who passes the primary CV screening must successfully complete a series of physical and practical evaluations before a permanent contract can be finalized:

  • Occupational Medical Evaluation: A full health check to confirm long-haul driving endurance, physical fitness, and visual acuity.

  • Practical Driving Evaluation: A hands-on driving test conducted by fleet examiners in a fully loaded ultra-heavy rig to evaluate backing skills and defensive driving habits.

  • USCS Training Modules: Successful completion of United Supply Chain Safety training models.

  • Background Check: Full verification of a clean criminal record through SAPS biometric fingerprint screening.
