What Does an Ultra-Heavy Motor Vehicle Driver Do at Vector?
Ultra-Heavy Motor Vehicle Drivers are at the heart of Vector Logistics’ distribution network. In this role, you will prepare and operate ultra-heavy duty vehicles to transport and distribute goods to various clients across the region. You will be responsible for safe loading, securing, transporting, and offloading of goods, handling all required trip documentation, and ensuring the vehicle is maintained to the highest standards of safety, cleanliness, and roadworthiness at all times.
This is a physically demanding, safety-critical driving role that requires a valid Code EC licence with PrDP (DGP endorsement), a minimum of 3 years of ultra-heavy vehicle driving experience, a clean criminal record, and the ability to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
Key Responsibilities of an Ultra-Heavy Motor Vehicle Driver
Vehicle Preparation & Pre-Trip Operations
- Prepare the vehicle for every trip by conducting thorough pre-departure inspections of all vehicle components.
- Ensure the vehicle is roadworthy, correctly fuelled, and all safety equipment — including fire extinguishers — is present and in working order.
- Complete all pre-trip checklists accurately and report any defects to the supervisor before departure.
- Adhere to all company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safety procedures for vehicle preparation.
Loading, Transporting & Offloading
- Assist with or oversee the loading of goods onto the vehicle, ensuring the load is correctly secured before departure.
- Ensure the vehicle is not overloaded in accordance with the National Road Traffic Act at all times.
- Apply correct vehicle loading techniques to prevent damage to goods and ensure safe weight distribution.
- Open and close tarpaulins where applicable before and after loading and offloading.
- Operate offloading equipment or oversee the offloading process at client delivery points.
- Transport goods safely and efficiently to all allocated client destinations.
Customer Service & Delivery
- Deal with customers in a professional, efficient, and courteous manner at every delivery point.
- Ensure all deliveries are completed within agreed timeframes and to the client’s satisfaction.
- Communicate any delivery issues, damages, or discrepancies to the supervisor and client promptly.
Documentation & Administration
- Handle all required trip documentation including delivery notes, waybills, and any other relevant paperwork.
- Ensure all documentation is correctly completed, signed, and returned to the depot after every trip.
- Report any emergencies, incidents, accidents, or near-misses to the supervisor immediately and follow the correct reporting procedure.
- Perform all other reasonable instructions from the supervisor as required.
Vehicle Housekeeping & Maintenance
- Maintain the vehicle in a clean, presentable, and well-kept condition at all times — inside and out.
- Ensure PPE and uniform are maintained to the required standard throughout every shift.
- Report all vehicle defects, mechanical concerns, or safety issues to the supervisor before or after every trip.
- Maximise vehicle cost-effectiveness and efficiency through responsible driving behaviour and proactive defect reporting.
Safety & Compliance
- Apply defensive driving techniques on all routes to minimise accident risk and protect road users, cargo, and company assets.
- Adhere to all Vector Logistics SOPs, safety procedures, and the National Road Traffic Act at all times.
- Participate in all required training modules, induction processes, and practical driving evaluations.
- Maintain a valid Code EC licence and PrDP (DGP) throughout the period of employment.
