What Does a Security Officer Do at the High Court?

Security Officers at the Gauteng Division of the High Court are responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and controlled access of one of South Africa’s most prominent judicial institutions. In this role, you will oversee outsourced security performance, manage CCTV and biometric systems, control access points, conduct building inspections and patrols, respond to emergencies and alarms, liaise with SAPS, EMS, Fire Brigade, and TMPD, and ensure court property and personnel are protected at all times.

This is a highly responsible, multi-function security role in a high-profile government court environment, requiring PSIRA registration, at least one year of security experience, and the ability to apply emergency procedures and manage complex security scenarios including VIP visits, high-profile cases, and crowd control.


Key Responsibilities of a Security Officer

Outsourced Security Oversight

  • Ensure that outsourced security officers render an efficient and effective service to the court daily.
  • Meet with outsourced security officials every morning to receive performance and biometric system reports.
  • Attend monthly meetings with outsourced security officials to evaluate security performance.
  • Assist and monitor the performance of outsourced security officials during peak hours and high-profile cases.

CCTV & Biometric Systems Management

  • Ensure all security and biometric systems function effectively within the court buildings on a daily basis.
  • Monitor all movements, events, and activities within the department’s premises using CCTV equipment.
  • Review camera footage and save recordings of all incidents for record and investigation purposes.
  • Capture biometric data for new personnel and delete records for personnel leaving the department.

Access Control

  • Monitor all access points to ensure effective access control throughout the court premises.
  • Ensure that everyone entering the building is subjected to access control procedures without exception.
  • Ensure no court property leaves the building without proper authorisation.
  • Ensure no liquor or video cameras are allowed in the building unless permission has been granted.
  • Assist outsourced security officials in controlling the number of visitors entering the court in groups.

Patrols & Building Inspections

  • Undertake building inspections and conduct primary patrols to identify, assess, and verify conditions.
  • Conduct regular patrols across court premises to detect and deter any security threats or hazards.
  • Report all incidents around court premises to the relevant authorities immediately.

Emergency Response

  • Apply emergency procedures in situations including bomb scares, riots, and other critical incidents.
  • Alert emergency services and department management immediately in the event of an emergency.
  • Monitor and respond to alarm system activations without delay.
  • Request and accompany bomb squad sweeps of the building prior to VIP arrivals and before the court term starts.
  • Attend meetings with SAPS, EMS, Fire Brigade, and TMPD during high-profile cases.

Crowd Control & Court Operations

  • Manage crowd control by informing security officials of overcrowded floors and directing traffic flow.
  • Assist with managing access during high-profile cases and VIP visits.
  • Treat all clients, court users, and colleagues equally and professionally at all times.

Records & Administration

  • Update the occurrence book/register as and when required.
  • Liaise with the supervisor to verify and ensure the accuracy of all recorded information.

Minimum Requirements – Security Officer

Educational Qualifications:

  • Grade 10 or equivalent qualification recognised by SAQA — essential
  • Basic Security Officer’s course registered with PSIRA — essential

Experience:

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in the security industry — essential

Licence:

  • Valid driver’s licence — advantageous

Skills & Competencies:

  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Good interpersonal and public relations skills
  • Ability to operate CCTV, biometric, and alarm systems
  • Ability to apply emergency procedures calmly and decisively
  • Ability to work in a high-profile, pressurised court security environment

Assessment:
