WHAT DOES A SECURITY OFFICER DO?
A Security Officer within Correctional Services is responsible for maintaining safety, control, and discipline within correctional centres. This includes managing access control, monitoring offender movement, and ensuring compliance with security procedures.
The role plays a vital part in creating a secure environment that supports offender rehabilitation while protecting staff, inmates, and the public. The ideal candidate is alert, disciplined, and capable of working in a high-security environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Access Control & Security Management
- Perform access control at entry points and within facility zones
- Monitor and control movement of offenders
- Enforce security procedures and protocols
- Maintain order within restricted areas
Offender Supervision & Escorting
- Guard offenders within correctional facilities
- Escort offenders to external institutions when required
- Ensure safe and controlled movement at all times
- Prevent unauthorised behaviour or incidents
Facility & Equipment Security
- Conduct physical security inspections
- Monitor and control security equipment and stores
- Ensure proper use and maintenance of security resources
- Maintain high standards of facility safety
Control Room Operations
- Operate and manage security control rooms
- Monitor surveillance and security systems
- Respond to incidents and security alerts
- Maintain accurate incident records and reports
Rehabilitation Support
- Support offender rehabilitation through safe custody and discipline

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
🎓 Educational Qualifications
- Matric / Grade 12 (essential)
- Successful completion of Correctional Science Learnership / Basic Training
💼 Experience
- CB1-1: No experience required
- CB1-2: Minimum 10 years’ experience at CB1-1 level
- CB1-3: Minimum 10 years’ experience at CB1-2 level
💻 Technical Skills
- Basic computer literacy
- Ability to complete reports and documentation
📚 Knowledge Requirements
- Knowledge of correctional legislation, policies, and procedures
- Understanding of Minimum Security Standards
