About the Role
Brights Hardware’s Richmond Park branch is a high-volume hardware retail environment serving both trade and retail customers across the Western Cape. The Sales Assistant – Tools plays a central role in the customer experience on the shop floor, providing expert product guidance, driving sales conversions, maintaining stock levels, and ensuring that the Tools Department is merchandised and presented to the highest standard at all times.
This is not a passive service role — it requires someone who actively engages with customers, uses product knowledge to steer purchase decisions, and takes personal ownership of the department’s sales performance. The ideal candidate brings at least two years of hardware retail experience, with specific and meaningful exposure to tools and power tools products. You will be expected to advise customers confidently on which tool or piece of equipment best suits their needs, handle special orders and stock queries, and contribute to the smooth administrative and operational running of the department.
A natural sales flair is listed as a key requirement for this role — Brights Hardware is looking for someone who finds genuine satisfaction in helping a customer choose the right product and closing a sale, not someone who waits to be asked. Combined with strong product knowledge, effective communication skills, and a commitment to excellent housekeeping and merchandising standards, these qualities will define your success in this position.
Please note: Brights Hardware is committed to reflecting the diversity of our nation. Recruitment and appointments will be conducted in line with the Company’s Employment Equity targets. The Company reserves the right to amend these terms and conditions at any time.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service & Sales Generation
- Attend to customers in a professional and helpful manner, engaging proactively on the shop floor and ensuring every interaction is positive and productive.
- Generate increased sales through excellent customer service, active product recommendations, and a natural ability to match customer needs with the right product solution.
- Advise customers on products — identifying the best tool or power tool for their specific task or project and communicating the recommendation with confidence and clarity.
- Ensure customer satisfaction is achieved consistently, contributing to repeat business and the sustainable growth of the branch’s sales margins and profits.
- Place stock orders with buyers where necessary to ensure product availability for customers and to prevent lost sales due to out-of-stock situations.
Merchandising & Product Presentation
- Ensure merchandising is executed correctly throughout the Tools Department, maintaining displays that are neat, logical, and visually appealing to customers.
- Ensure that all products are correctly priced at all times, identifying and rectifying pricing discrepancies without delay.
- Uphold in-house entry-level merchandising standards as set by Brights Hardware, maintaining consistency with the branch’s presentation requirements.
- Maintain awareness of promotional products and current specials within the Tools Department, ensuring these are clearly communicated to customers on the floor.
Stock Control & Inventory Management
- Control stock levels within the Tools Department, monitoring product availability and initiating replenishment orders where necessary.
- Conduct regular stock counts in line with department requirements, maintaining accurate inventory records between scheduled stock takes.
- Participate actively in perpetual stock takes as required by the branch, contributing to full inventory accuracy across the department.
- Identify and report stock discrepancies, damages, or shortages to the relevant supervisor or stock controller promptly.
Administration & Operational Support
- Attend to relevant administrative tasks, including the upkeep of the customer book, maintenance of the special orders file, and forwarding of invoices as required.
- Ensure all special orders are accurately recorded and followed through from placement to customer collection without error or delay.
- Ensure good housekeeping of the work area at all times, maintaining a clean, safe, and well-organised department environment.
- Perform any other work-related tasks as reasonably delegated by a superior.
Minimum Requirements
Educational Qualifications
- Matric (Grade 12) or three completed Intercept courses equating to a total of 120 credits
Experience
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a hardware retail environment — this is a firm requirement
- At least 2 years of direct product exposure to tools and/or power tools — candidates without this specific experience will not meet the requirements of the role
Technical Skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of tools and power tools product ranges, including their applications, specifications, and appropriate use cases
- Familiarity with in-house basic sales techniques and the ability to apply them naturally and effectively on the floor
- Understanding of in-house entry-level merchandising standards and the ability to execute and maintain them consistently
- Competency in stock control processes, including regular counts, replenishment ordering, and stock take participation
- Completion of two Department Product Knowledge Certificates is a listed requirement — candidates who hold these or equivalent formal product training will be strongly preferred
Skills & Competencies
- Natural sales flair — a genuine, innate ability to engage customers, identify their needs, and guide purchase decisions with confidence
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain product differences and recommendations clearly to customers of all levels
- Strong customer service orientation, with a consistent commitment to ensuring customer satisfaction at every interaction
- Sound organisational skills for managing administrative tasks, special orders, and stock-related documentation

- Proactive and self-motivated, with the ability to take initiative on the sales floor without waiting for customer prompts
- Reliable and detail-oriented, with a genuine commitment to pricing accuracy, merchandising standards, and stock control discipline
- Able to work effectively independently and as part of a team in a busy hardware retail environment
- Passionate about tools, hardware, and the DIY space, with a natural enthusiasm for the product category that translates into confident, credible customer advice
Advantageous / Preferred
- Completion of the Brights Induction (Service Excellence) programme (advantageous for internal candidates)
- Completion of two or more Department Product Knowledge Certificates relevant to tools and power tools
- Experience with trade customers and an understanding of the specific product and service expectations of professional contractors and builders

Core Values
Product Expertise
A Sales Assistant in the Tools Department at Brights Hardware is only as valuable as the product knowledge they bring to the shop floor. Customers come in with a task to complete, a problem to solve, or a project to finish — and they need to trust that the person advising them knows what they are talking about. Brights Hardware expects its Tools Sales Assistants to invest continuously in their product knowledge, to understand the difference between product ranges, and to be the person on the floor that both colleagues and customers instinctively turn to when a technical product question arises.
Customer Centricity
Every customer who walks into the Tools Department has a need, and the Sales Assistant’s job is to understand that need and meet it — accurately, efficiently, and with a level of genuine care that makes the customer feel valued. Brights Hardware’s commitment to customer satisfaction is not a slogan; it is the commercial engine that drives repeat business and sustainable margin growth. A Sales Assistant who leaves every customer interaction better than they found it — whether through the right product recommendation, a helpful special order, or simply a friendly and knowledgeable conversation — is the one who builds the branch’s reputation one customer at a time.
Sales Drive
Natural sales flair is not something that can be taught in isolation — it is a disposition, a genuine enjoyment of the process of matching a customer’s need to a product solution and seeing the transaction complete successfully. Brights Hardware wants Sales Assistants in the Tools Department who are energised by sales targets, who look for opportunities to recommend complementary products, and who understand that every customer on the floor is a potential sale that is either won or lost based on the quality of the engagement. Sales drive, underpinned by product knowledge, is what makes a great Tools Sales Assistant.
Operational Discipline
The best sales people are also reliable operators. In the Brights Hardware Tools Department, that means pricing products accurately, merchandising displays correctly, processing special orders without error, maintaining the customer book diligently, and participating fully in stock takes. These operational disciplines are not secondary to the sales role — they are the foundation of a department that runs well, stocks the right products, and gives customers a consistent and professional experience every time they visit.
Teamwork & Communication
A hardware retail branch is a collaborative environment, and the Tools Sales Assistant works alongside stock controllers, buyers, supervisors, cashiers, and yard staff to deliver a seamless customer experience. Effective verbal and written communication — with customers, colleagues, and management — is essential to managing special orders, resolving stock queries, and keeping the broader team informed of department needs. Brights Hardware values Sales Assistants who communicate clearly, follow through on commitments, and contribute positively to the team culture of the Richmond Park branch.
Career Growth Opportunities
Brights Hardware offers motivated and high-performing Sales Assistants a structured pathway to grow within the retail hardware environment. With strong product knowledge, consistent sales performance, and a commitment to operational excellence, you can progress through the following stages:
- Sales Assistant → Senior Sales Assistant / Department Specialist
- Senior Sales Assistant / Department Specialist → Department Supervisor
- Department Supervisor → Branch Operations Manager
- Branch Operations Manager → Regional Operations Manager
Your career path is in your hands.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is two years of tools and power tools experience really a firm requirement, or will general hardware experience be considered? Yes — two years of direct product exposure to tools and/or power tools is a firm and specific requirement for this role, in addition to the two years of general hardware retail experience. The Tools Department at Brights Hardware Richmond Park serves both retail and trade customers who expect confident, technically accurate product guidance. Candidates who have spent two years in a hardware environment but predominantly in categories such as paint, plumbing, or garden will find that they do not meet the specific product knowledge requirement for this position. If your hardware experience has not included meaningful exposure to tools and power tools, this role may not be the right fit at this time.
What are the Department Product Knowledge Certificates listed in the requirements? Brights Hardware requires candidates to hold two Department Product Knowledge Certificates relevant to the Tools category. These are formal internal or industry-recognised certifications that demonstrate a structured and verified level of product knowledge within specific hardware retail departments. Candidates who hold these certificates — or equivalent formal product training from a previous hardware retail employer — will be strongly preferred. If you have completed comparable product training but under a different certification name, include the details in your CV and allow the recruiting team to assess equivalency.
What does “natural sales flair” mean in practice for this role? Natural sales flair refers to an innate tendency to engage customers proactively, ask the right questions to understand their needs, and guide them confidently toward the best product solution — without being prompted and without feeling forced or scripted. In practice, it means you do not wait for customers to ask for help; you approach them, initiate a conversation, and take ownership of the outcome. It also means you are genuinely energised by a successful sale rather than indifferent to it. Brights Hardware assesses this quality during the interview process, and candidates who can demonstrate specific examples of sales-driven customer engagement from their previous experience will be well positioned.
Will I be required to handle administrative tasks in addition to floor sales? Yes — the role includes a defined administrative component alongside the floor sales function. This includes maintaining the customer book, managing the special orders file, forwarding invoices to relevant parties, and ensuring accurate record-keeping of stock orders placed with buyers. These tasks are not onerous, but they do require attention to detail, follow-through, and the organisational discipline to manage documentation consistently alongside the demands of a busy sales floor. Candidates who prefer a purely customer-facing role without any administrative responsibility should factor this into their decision to apply.
When does this vacancy close, and how will I know if my application has been shortlisted? The closing date for applications is 11 August 2026. Given the specific product knowledge requirements of this role, early application is strongly recommended — the position may be filled before the closing date if a suitable candidate is identified. If you have not been contacted within two weeks after the closing date, please consider your application unsuccessful. Correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates only.
Does Brights Hardware have Employment Equity targets for this position? Yes. Brights Hardware is committed to building a workforce that reflects the diversity of South Africa, and all recruitment is conducted in line with its Employment Equity plan and targets. Candidates from designated groups are encouraged to apply. Preference may be given to candidates whose appointment contributes to the achievement of the company’s equity objectives, provided all minimum requirements — including the tools and power tools product experience requirement — have been met.
