About the Role

At the Edenvale branch, the Retail Shop Assistant is a key member of the sales floor team — responsible for serving customers, managing stock, maintaining displays, and contributing to an outstanding in-store experience every single day.

This role is well-suited to a young, confident, and motivated individual who has a genuine passion for customer service and an interest in tools, machinery, and the DIY sector. Preference will be given to candidates who have prior experience in a retail sales environment, with exposure to merchandising, stock taking, stock control, and general retail branch procedures. Technical knowledge in the DIY tools or hardware environment will be considered an absolute added advantage.

Key Responsibilities

🛒 Customer Service & Sales

  • Serve customers on the shop floor with professionalism, energy, and genuine product enthusiasm.
  • Answer customer questions about merchandise, helping them identify the right tools or machinery for their needs.
  • Provide accurate technical product information at an entry-level to assist customers in making informed purchasing decisions.
  • Handle all customer queries promptly and courteously, ensuring every interaction reflects Adendorff’s commitment to service excellence.
  • Build positive relationships with customers to encourage repeat business and brand loyalty.

💳 Point of Sale & Transactions

  • Process customer purchases accurately using the store’s point of sale (POS) system.
  • Handle cash, card, and other approved payment methods in compliance with branch cash handling procedures.
  • Issue receipts and ensure all sales transactions are correctly completed and balanced.
  • Report any discrepancies or system issues to the relevant supervisor without delay.

📦 Stock Control & Replenishment

  • Restock shelves and replenish product displays in line with branch standards and merchandising guidelines.
  • Assist with stock taking exercises as directed by branch management, ensuring accurate counts and timely reporting.
  • Unload deliveries, check stock against delivery notes, and ensure items are correctly stored in the appropriate locations.
  • Monitor stock levels throughout the day and proactively address low-stock situations before they impact the customer experience.

🗂️ Merchandising & Display Maintenance

  • Maintain store displays to ensure they are neat, correctly priced, and visually appealing at all times.
  • Arrange and face up products in accordance with planograms and merchandising standards.
  • Assist with the setup of in-store promotions and seasonal displays as instructed by management.
  • Ensure all price labels and signage are accurate, up to date, and clearly visible to customers.

🧹 Housekeeping & Store Standards

  • Uphold general housekeeping standards across all areas of the store, including the shop floor, aisles, and stockroom.
  • Ensure the branch is maintained as a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for customers and colleagues alike.
  • Adhere to all applicable health and safety protocols within the retail environment.
  • Report any maintenance issues, potential hazards, or damaged stock to the relevant supervisor promptly.

Minimum Requirements

Educational Qualifications

  • Senior Certificate (Matric / Grade 12) — minimum requirement.
  • Any additional retail, sales, or technical qualification will be considered advantageous.

Experience

  • Entry level — no formal work experience is required, though prior retail or customer service exposure is preferred.
  • Previous experience in a retail sales environment will be given preference.
  • Background in merchandising, stock taking, stock control, or general retail branch procedures is a strong advantage.

Technical Skills

  • Basic computer literacy and willingness to learn the store’s point of sale (POS) system.
  • Technical knowledge in the DIY tools or hardware environment is an absolute added advantage.
