About the Role

The Pharmacist plays a key clinical and operational leadership role within the Dis-Chem Strubensvalley dispensary. Working under the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) regulatory frameworks, you will evaluate prescriptions, verify drug dosages and potential interactions, manage chronic and specialized medication authorizations (including HIV/AIDS and oncology), and supervise dispensary staff to deliver safe, effective pharmaceutical care.

Clinical Evaluation & Prescription Dispensing

  • Evaluate and interpret prescription scripts accurately, maintaining full compliance with the Pharmacy Act, Medicines Act, and SAPC regulations.
  • Capture script details on Unisolv/SAP systems, verifying correct drug selection, dosage calculations, patient allergy records, and adverse drug interaction risks.
  • Supervise and check the picking, packing, compounding, and labeling of prescription stock performed by dispensary assistants prior to patient dispatch.
  • Counsel patients at the dispensary and over-the-counter (OTC) section regarding correct drug usage, side effects, storage requirements, and treatment outcomes.

Medical Aid Claims & Administrative Governance

  • Submit electronic claims to medical schemes timeously, correcting rejected scripts and following up on claims errors.
  • Secure prior authorizations for chronic conditions, HIV/AIDS regimens, and oncology therapies from scheme administrators.
  • Maintain complete patient profiles on dispensary systems, performing local profile merges and coordinating with Vexall for centralized profile updates.
  • Monitor script tracking reports and maintain complete document control across all pharmaceutical records.

Dispensary Stock & Operational Management

  • Manage stock control across Schedule 1 through Schedule 5 medications, monitoring stock levels and reporting shortages to the Dispensary Manager.
  • Facilitate bi-annual stock takes, manage cold-chain fridge temperature monitoring, and enforce asset protection protocols.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and compliant dispensary workstations in accordance with Dis-Chem housekeeping SOPs and health and safety rules.
  • Serve as an operational role model and mentor to junior dispensary staff, pharmacist assistants, and interns.

Educational Qualifications & Registration

  • Grade 12 / Matric Certificate.
  • Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) or equivalent degree.
  • Active Registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a Pharmacist.

Work Experience & Technical Competencies

  • Minimum 2 to 3 years of retail pharmacy experience.
