Frequently Asked Questions – OHS Inspector Jobs Northern Cape 2026

What does an OHS Inspector do on a typical working day? On a typical day, the OHS Inspector may conduct scheduled compliance inspections at workplaces across their allocated area — visiting factories, construction sites, mines, and other workplaces to verify that employers are complying with the OHS Act and its regulations. They may also respond to complaints from workers about unsafe working conditions, investigate workplace incidents such as injuries or fatalities, issue compliance or prohibition notices to non-compliant employers, conduct employer awareness sessions, and compile inspection reports. The role involves significant driving across the Northern Cape.

What is the OHS Act and what powers does an OHS Inspector have? The Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 is South Africa’s primary legislation governing workplace safety — requiring employers to provide and maintain a safe working environment for all employees. OHS Inspectors are designated as inspectors in terms of the Act and have extensive enforcement powers — including the right to enter any workplace without prior notice, examine records and documents, take samples and measurements, and issue improvement notices, contravention notices, or prohibition notices that can shut down unsafe operations immediately. Non-compliance with an inspector’s notice is a criminal offence.

Do I need prior OHS inspection experience or will I be trained? The post does not list prior OHS inspection experience as a formal requirement beyond the NQF Level 6 qualification. The Department of Employment and Labour provides training on the OHS Act, inspection methodologies, investigation techniques, and enforcement procedures for newly appointed inspectors. Candidates with prior experience in health and safety, workplace compliance, or engineering — even outside a government inspection context — will be well prepared for the training programme and the demands of the role.

What does appearing in court as a state witness involve? Where an employer has been charged with contravening the OHS Act following an inspection or incident investigation, the OHS Inspector who conducted the investigation may be called to appear in the relevant Magistrate’s Court as a state witness — presenting the evidence gathered during the inspection or investigation to support the prosecution. This requires the Inspector to compile detailed, legally defensible investigation reports, maintain proper evidence records, and give sworn testimony under cross-examination. Training on court preparation and witness conduct is provided by the Department.

What South African National Standards (SANS) are relevant to OHS inspectors? SANS Codes are technical standards developed by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) — certain of which have been incorporated into OHS regulations and therefore carry the force of law. Examples include codes for pressure vessels, lifting equipment, electrical installations, hazardous chemical substances, and construction safety. OHS Inspectors must be familiar with the SANS codes relevant to the workplaces they inspect — particularly in mining, construction, and manufacturing environments across the Northern Cape.

Can I apply for both Kimberley and Kuruman? Yes — you may apply for both posts but must submit a separate, complete application for each, quoting the correct reference number — HR4/4/8/164 for Kimberley and HR4/4/8/165 for Kuruman. Note that both posts use the same application email address (Jobs-NCKIM@labour.gov.za) — ensure each application clearly quotes its specific reference number so that they are assessed separately.
