What Does a Learnership/Placement Officer Do?
Learnership/Placement Officers are essential to the successful transition of TVET College students into the workplace. In this role, you will be responsible for facilitating student placements, conducting job readiness training, liaising with commerce and industry stakeholders, maintaining student tracking and employer databases, monitoring work placement practices, conducting work-based assessments, and producing quality reports and statistics — ensuring that students are placed effectively and that all placement activities are managed in line with applicable legislation and DHET policies.
This is a stakeholder-facing, data-driven role that requires a relevant qualification, 2 to 3 years’ employment services or administration experience, a valid driver’s licence, and sound knowledge of the PSET and CET Act, employment service markets, and Public Service prescripts.

Key Responsibilities of a Learnership/Placement Officer
Student Placement Facilitation
- Facilitate the placement of students in appropriate work-based learning and employment opportunities.
- Identify and develop placement opportunities in the labour market for TVET College students.
- Liaise with commerce, industry, and other relevant stakeholders to secure and maintain placement partnerships.
- Monitor and evaluate work placement practices to ensure quality and compliance.
Job Readiness Training
- Conduct job readiness training programmes for students preparing to enter the workplace.
- Equip students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence required for successful employment.
- Develop and facilitate training materials and sessions aligned to industry requirements.
Database & Tracking System Management
- Maintain and update the student tracking system accurately and timeously.
- Maintain and update the employer and student placement database.
- Ensure all records are current, accurate, and readily accessible for reporting and monitoring purposes.
Reporting & Statistics
- Develop quality electronic reports and statistics on placement activities and outcomes.
- Submit accurate reports to management on student placements, employer engagement, and programme performance.
- Support monitoring and evaluation of work placement practices through data collection and analysis.
Work-Based Assessment
- Conduct work-based assessments for students in placement to evaluate learning and performance.
- Provide feedback to students and relevant stakeholders on assessment outcomes.
- Ensure all work-based assessments are conducted in line with applicable DHET policies and quality standards.
Stakeholder Liaison & Networking
- Liaise with commerce, industry, government departments, and other relevant stakeholders.
- Build and maintain relationships with employers and industry partners to expand placement opportunities.
- Apply networking and negotiation skills to secure new placement sites and sustain existing partnerships.
Minimum Requirements – Learnership/Placement Officer
Educational Qualifications:
- Grade 12 / NCV Level 4 or equivalent (essential)
- National Diploma or Degree in Business Administration, Public Management, Marketing, Public Relations, or equivalent qualification (essential)
Experience:
- 2 to 3 years’ relevant experience in an employment services or administration environment (essential)
Licences:
- Valid driver’s licence (essential)
Knowledge Requirements:
- Knowledge of employment services and administration services
- Knowledge of the employment service market
