Primary Key Duties & Responsibilities
1. Secretarial & High Court Administration Support
-
Manage, diarise, and maintain appointments, meetings, and official schedules for the Judge.
-
Type, format, and file judgments; ensure delivered judgments and signed draft orders are submitted to the Typist for scanning and uploaded onto Case-Lines, Court-Online, and the internal library.

Receive and screen visitors, attend to public/legal queries, track incoming/outgoing court documents, and manage stationery procurement for the Judge’s chambers.

Collect case files from the Registrar’s Criminal Section before trial commencement; maintain review registers, reserved judgment templates, and update the Statistics Officer and Judge President’s office upon judgment hand-down.
2. Courtroom Operations & In-Court Duties

Prepare court rolls for Opposed Motion and Urgent Court, distributing them to relevant legal stakeholders.

Ensure Heads of Argument filed by legal practitioners are collated and provided to the Judge ahead of hearings.

Administer oaths or solemn declarations in court when required, prepare the Judge’s bench book, and oversee Ushers in transferring files to court.

Ensure all legal parties and stakeholders are present before court commencement and formally call cases on record by case number and party names.

Maintain professional control, recording, and custody of criminal court trial exhibits.
3. Travel, Subsistence & Logistics Management

Coordinate travel, accommodation, and logistical bookings for official judicial duties.

Maintain the Judge’s vehicle logbook, ensuring submission to the Transport Officer by the 5th of every month, and arrange vehicle maintenance, servicing, and pre-authorisations.

Remind the Judge of expense invoices to ensure prompt processing of S&T (Subsistence and Travelling), cellular phone, and 3G data claims.

Maintain and update library loose-leaf legal publications in the Judge’s chambers.
Minimum Requirements
Educational Qualifications & Legal Credentials

Educational Qualification: Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree or relevant equivalent legal qualification at NQF Level 8 (480 credits) as recognized by SAQA.

Legal Experience: Practical legal experience is required.

Skills Assessment: Candidates must pass a compulsory typing test (including Dictaphone typing).

Driver’s Licence: A valid driver’s licence serves as an added advantage.
