Key Responsibilities
Patient Transport & Mobility Assistance
- Assist, accompany, and transport patients per wheelchair, trolley, or bed from one point to another within the hospital — including from wards to theatre, radiology, outpatient departments, and other clinical areas.
- Assist with ambulatory and walking patients, providing physical support and guidance to ensure safe movement through the hospital environment.
- Ensure all patient transport activities are conducted with care, dignity, and respect, prioritising patient safety and comfort at all times.
- Respond promptly to transport requests from ward staff and supervisors, minimising waiting times and supporting the smooth flow of patient movement through the facility.
- Report any patient incidents, falls, or concerns observed during transport activities to the relevant ward staff or supervisor immediately.
Equipment Handling & Management
- Assist with the shifting of medical equipment between wards, departments, and storage areas as directed by the supervisor or clinical staff.
- Collect, clean, and return wheelchairs and trolleys to their designated locations after use, ensuring all equipment is in a clean, functional, and ready condition at all times.
- Collect and clean blood hampers in accordance with the hospital’s infection control and hygiene standards.
- Report any damaged, faulty, or missing equipment to the relevant supervisor without delay to ensure prompt repair or replacement.
- Ensure all equipment under the Porter’s responsibility is correctly stored and accounted for at the end of each shift.
Removal of Bodies & Mortuary Support
- Assist with the removal of bodies from wards and perform all relevant duties associated with this function in a respectful, dignified, and procedurally correct manner.
- Carry out all mortuary-related porter duties in full compliance with the hospital’s protocols and standard operating procedures for the handling and transport of deceased persons.
- Maintain composure and professionalism at all times during the performance of these duties, recognising the sensitivity of the environment and the needs of grieving family members and clinical staff.
Ward & Supervisor Support
- Render support to the supervisor and ward staff across a range of operational tasks, responding promptly and cooperatively to all reasonable instructions.
- Contribute to the efficient day-to-day operation of the ward and hospital environment, assisting clinical and support staff wherever practical assistance is required.
- Be prepared to rotate within the various components of the facility — including different wards, departments, and service areas — based on operational needs and staffing requirements.

Administrative Duties
- Perform administrative duties related to the Porter function as directed by the supervisor, including maintaining records of patient transport, equipment movements, and other relevant activities.
