Purpose of the Job
The General Assistant is responsible for ensuring excellent customer service, proper merchandising of stock, accurate shelf labelling, and maintaining housekeeping standards within the store.
This role ensures that store aisles are safe, clean, well-stocked, and customer-friendly at all times.
Key Responsibilities of a General Assistant
Customer Service
- Assist customers with product queries and recommendations
- Provide friendly and helpful service at all times
- Resolve customer complaints or escalate where necessary
- Ensure customers receive a positive in-store experience
Merchandising & Stock Display
- Ensure bulk stock is safely and correctly merchandised
- Follow store layout plans and planograms
- Keep shelves fully stocked and neatly arranged
- Ensure stock is displayed immediately after delivery
- Maintain correct product placement and visibility
Housekeeping & Store Maintenance
- Keep assigned areas clean, safe, and obstacle-free
- Ensure customers can move freely through aisles
- Maintain correct shelf pricing and labelling
- Complete required housekeeping checklists (canteen, toilets, etc.)
- Ensure store appearance meets company standards
Health & Safety (OHSA Compliance)
- Follow all Occupational Health and Safety regulations
- Ensure safe merchandising of stock in all areas
- Report safety risks, hazards, or incidents to management immediately
- Maintain a safe environment for customers and staff
Stock Loss & Damage Control
- Report damaged stock immediately to the Store Manager
- Assist in reducing stock loss and maintaining inventory control
- Handle stock carefully to prevent damage or loss
Minimum Requirements – General Assistant
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the following:
Education:
- Grade 10 / NQF Level 3 with 1 year experience
OR - Grade 12 with no experience required
Additional Requirements:
- Valid South African ID or work permit
- Ability to communicate in English and local language
- Basic numeracy and calculation skills
- Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays
- Ability to work under pressure in a busy retail environment
