A retail store is inviting external applications for the position of General Assistant (External Applications Only). Purpose of the Role

The General Assistant is responsible for delivering outstanding customer service, maintaining merchandising standards, and ensuring housekeeping excellence within the allocated department.

The role requires attention to detail, physical stamina, and the ability to work under pressure while maintaining professionalism and efficiency.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Grade 10 or NQF Level 3 with 1 year of related work experience

OR

Grade 12 (Matric) without related work experience

Ability to communicate effectively in English and the dominant language spoken in the geographical area where the position is available

Valid South African ID or valid work permit

Ability to perform basic calculations accurately

Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays

Ability to work under pressure in a busy retail environment

Key Performance Areas

Customer Service

Advise and assist customers with selecting the correct products and responding to queries.

Handle and assist in resolving customer complaints professionally and efficiently.

Create a welcoming shopping experience by demonstrating a helpful and positive attitude at all times.

Customer interaction is a core component of this role, and professionalism is expected in every engagement.

Merchandising Standards

Ensure that the bulk stock area is merchandised safely and according to the store layout plan.

Maintain full merchandising compliance within your area of responsibility according to store layouts and planograms.

Ensure shelves are always properly stocked, neat, and visually appealing.

Accurate merchandising directly impacts customer satisfaction and overall store performance.

Housekeeping

Keep your designated area free of obstacles and hazards at all times.

Ensure stock is merchandised immediately after being received.

Maintain clear and safe aisles to allow customers to enter and leave without risk of injury or inconvenience.

Ensure correct shelf price labelling within your area of responsibility.

Complete required checklists when on duty, including canteen and toilet/shower schedules where applicable.

Maintaining a clean and organised workspace enhances both safety and customer experience.

Safety (OHSA) Compliance

Adhere to Occupational Health and Safety regulations within your area of responsibility.

Use appropriate safety gear when required.

Ensure racking and bulk stock are safely merchandised to allow customers and colleagues to move safely within the store.

Report any safety discrepancies or hazards to the Store Manager immediately.

Safety is a non-negotiable priority and forms part of daily operational standards.

Manage Stock Loss

Identify and report damaged stock within your area of responsibility to the Store Manager.

Take proactive steps to minimise stock loss through proper handling and vigilance.

Protecting company assets is a shared responsibility among all team members.
