About the Role

The General Assistant (B&I) at Tsebo Catering plays a critical support role in the daily operation of corporate and industrial canteens in Bellville. Working directly alongside kitchen cooks and chefs, you will assist with basic culinary tasks—such as chopping, preparing fresh salads, and plating desserts—while ensuring the food service counter remains well-stocked, visually appealing, and spotlessly clean throughout service shifts.
In addition to food prep, this role involves direct interaction with diners. You will operate cash registers, process meal transactions, serve hot entrees, log leftover food items, and maintain dining room cleanliness. Key Responsibilities of a General Assistant

Food Preparation & Culinary Support
  • Assist kitchen cooks and chefs with daily meal preparation, specifically assembling fresh salads, appetizers, and desserts.
  • Portion, plate, and place entrees, side dishes, salads, and desserts onto the active serving counter.
  • Monitor service lines continuously during meal hours to ensure food displays remain fully stocked, fresh, and well-presented.
  • Properly store, label, and record food leftovers at the end of service in accordance with food safety guidelines.
Food Serving & Cashier Operations
  • Serve hot meals, beverages, and cold items to client staff and visitors in a polite, friendly, and efficient manner.
  • Operate cash registers or digital point-of-sale (POS) systems accurately when handling meal transactions.
  • Conduct shift handovers by counting, verifying, and signing over stock or cash float to incoming shift personnel where applicable.
Hygiene, Sanitation & Maintenance
  • Maintain total compliance with statutory regulations and company policies regarding kitchen cleanliness and personal hygiene.
  • Clean, sanitize, and clear canteen dining tables, serving counters, prep stations, and kitchen work areas continuously.
  • Wash, dry, and correctly store utensils, trays, serving equipment, and kitchenware.
  • Follow correct waste disposal and recycling procedures within the kitchen and dining areas.
Customer Service & Quality Assurance
  • Deliver exceptional customer service to meet and exceed client expectations within the provisions of the site contract.
  • Address basic customer inquiries, handle compliments or complaints professionally, and report feedback to kitchen management immediately.
  • Participate in on-the-job orientation and assist in guiding newly appointed general assistants when required.
  • Attend mandatory team operational meetings, safety briefings, and internal training workshops.
