About the Role

Adendorff Machinery Mart’s Umbilo branch in Durban is a fast-paced, high-volume retail environment serving trade, engineering, automotive, and DIY customers across KwaZulu-Natal. The Counter Sales professional in the Tools and Machinery department is a cornerstone of the branch’s commercial performance — responsible for driving sales generation, delivering exceptional customer care, maintaining accurate stock levels, and upholding Adendorff’s reputation for consistent, professional service at the counter.

This is not a purely transactional role. You will be expected to lead by example on the sales floor, demonstrate a thorough understanding of tools, machinery, and spares, and contribute actively to the supervisory and administrative functions of the branch. Preference will be given to candidates who bring prior exposure to the automotive, engineering, tools and machinery, or hardware sector, and who understand the specific needs and expectations of trade customers in this environment.

The ideal candidate is a confident, honest, and reliable individual who can operate effectively as both a team player and an independent contributor. Adendorff’s culture is built on long-term commitment — to its customers, to its vision, and to the development of its people — and this role offers a genuine opportunity to build a lasting, rewarding career within that framework.

Please note: An own vehicle is a non-negotiable requirement for this position and must be confirmed at application stage. The Company encourages all designated groups to apply in line with its commitment to Employment Equity.

Core Values

Sales Excellence

Adendorff Machinery Mart is a market leader because its Counter Sales professionals are genuinely passionate about selling the right solution to the right customer. In this role, sales excellence is not measured only in rand value — it is reflected in the quality of every customer interaction, the accuracy of every product recommendation, and the consistency with which you meet and exceed the branch’s strategic growth targets. Bringing energy, product knowledge, and commercial acumen to the counter every day is what defines a top performer at Adendorff.

Customer Centricity

Adendorff’s long-term success is built on lasting relationships with its customers, and Counter Sales professionals are the primary custodians of those relationships at branch level. Whether you are serving a seasoned engineer, a small-business owner, or a first-time DIY enthusiast, the standard of care you deliver must be identical — professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely focused on finding the best solution. Promoting a positive image of the company through high-quality customer service is not optional; it is the baseline expectation.

Integrity & Reliability

Trade customers return to Adendorff because they trust the people behind the counter. That trust is earned through honesty in product advice, reliability in stock promises, and consistency in the quality of service delivered — shift after shift, customer after customer. Adendorff expects its Counter Sales staff to be the kind of people that both customers and colleagues can depend on absolutely, and to uphold the ethical standards of the business without compromise.

Leadership & Initiative

This role carries a supervisory dimension that sets it apart from a standard shop assistant position. Adendorff is looking for someone who leads by example — who sets the tone for customer engagement on the sales floor, who takes ownership of stock levels and administrative accuracy, and who actively mentors and supports junior team members. If you bring energy and initiative to your work and inspire those around you to perform at their best, you will thrive in this environment.

Continuous Learning & Development

Adendorff Machinery Mart is explicit in its commitment to developing well-rounded staff across all aspects of the business. The tools, spares, and machinery landscape evolves constantly, and Counter Sales professionals who invest in their own product knowledge and self-development are the ones who deliver the most value to customers — and who progress furthest within the company. A genuine curiosity about how things work, and a drive to know the product range inside out, is what will make you exceptional in this role.

Your career path is in your hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

What salary can I expect in this Counter Sales role at Adendorff Umbilo? The salary is negotiable and includes benefits, with the final package to be discussed and agreed upon during the interview process. Adendorff benchmarks remuneration competitively within the tools, machinery, and hardware retail sector. Candidates with relevant technical knowledge, prior trade counter experience, or a background in automotive or engineering sales will typically be better positioned to negotiate. You are encouraged to discuss your expectations candidly during the selection process.

Why is an own vehicle listed as essential for this position? An own vehicle is a non-negotiable requirement for this role. Given the operational demands of the Umbilo branch and the nature of the Counter Sales function — which may involve branch-related responsibilities beyond standard trading hours or across multiple locations — reliable personal transport is essential. Candidates who cannot confirm access to their own vehicle should note that this requirement cannot be waived and that applications from candidates without transport will not be progressed.

Do I need technical knowledge of tools and machinery to apply? While technical knowledge of DIY tools, spares, power tools, or machinery is listed as an absolute added advantage, it is not a hard minimum requirement. What is most important at application stage is a genuine passion for this product environment and a demonstrable willingness to learn. Preference will, however, be given to candidates with prior exposure to the automotive, engineering, tools and machinery, or hardware sector, as this knowledge significantly reduces the onboarding curve and directly enhances your ability to serve trade customers confidently.

What are the working hours, and is Saturday work compulsory? Standard working hours for this permanent position are Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:00, and Saturday mornings from 08:00 to 13:00. Saturday work is a firm requirement of this role and forms part of the standard working week. Candidates must be available and willing to commit to this schedule consistently. Any additional availability required during peak periods or promotional events will be communicated by branch management in advance.

When does this vacancy close, and how will I know if my application was successful? The closing date for applications is 11 July 2026. Should you not receive feedback within two weeks of submitting your application, please consider your application unsuccessful. Adendorff receives a high volume of applications for sales roles, and only candidates who are shortlisted for interview will be contacted. Applying early — rather than close to the deadline — is strongly recommended, as the position may be filled ahead of the closing date if a suitable candidate is identified.

Does Adendorff support Employment Equity, and who is encouraged to apply? Yes. Adendorff Machinery Mart actively encourages all designated groups to apply for this position, in line with its commitment to Employment Equity and workforce transformation across all levels of the business.
