About the Role
The Artisan Foreman Grade A: Electrical (Workshop) is a senior technical role within the Department of Public Works Pretoria Regional Office. In this position, you will supervise and produce designs according to client specifications, oversee the inspection and repair of electrical equipment and facilities to recognised standards, manage the procurement of materials and equipment, and compile and submit technical reports. You will be responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient maintenance of technical faults across the workshop and related facilities, while supervising a team of artisans and support staff to ensure consistent, high-quality service delivery.
This is a hands-on, supervisory technical role that demands a valid Trade Test Certificate in the electrical trade, five years of post-qualification artisan experience, and a solid working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), legal compliance requirements, and technical production processes. A valid driver’s licence is an essential requirement.

Key Responsibilities of an Artisan Foreman Grade A: Electrical (Workshop)
Design, Production & Technical Execution
- Supervise and produce designs according to client specifications and within the limits of production capability.
- Produce objects with material and equipment according to job specifications and recognised standards.
- Apply computer-aided technical applications in the design and production process.
- Ensure all technical work meets required quality standards and project specifications throughout.
Electrical Maintenance & Fault Management
- Ensure the effective and efficient maintenance of technical faults across electrical equipment and facilities.
- Inspect equipment and facilities to identify technical faults and plan appropriate remedial action.
- Repair equipment and facilities related to electrical systems according to applicable standards.
- Test repaired equipment and facilities against specifications to confirm satisfactory completion.
- Update the register of maintained and repaired faults consistently and accurately.
Procurement & Materials Management
- Obtain quotations for required equipment and materials in line with Supply Chain Management procedures.
- Purchase (order) required equipment and materials within authorised procurement processes.
- Ensure that all procurement activities comply with applicable legal and financial management frameworks.
- Maintain accurate records of all procurement activities, orders, and expenditure.
Reporting & Administration
- Compile and submit technical reports as required by management and stakeholders.
- Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, fault registers, and technical interventions.
- Provide technical consulting support and recommendations to management as required.
- Ensure all documentation relating to workshop operations is completed accurately and timeously.
Supervision & Team Management
- Supervise employees to ensure effective and consistent service delivery across the workshop.
- Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and on-the-job support to artisans and workshop staff.
- Apply change management and problem-solving skills to address operational and personnel challenges.
- Ensure full compliance with OHSA requirements and safe working practices across the workshop at all times.
