About the Role
This is a hands-on, frontline retail role that covers two core areas of store operations — merchandising and point of sale support. As a Casual Frontshop Assistant at Dis-Chem Die Boord, you will be responsible for ensuring that shelves are fully stocked, neatly presented, and accurately priced at all times, while also supporting customers at the till with the same professionalism and care that Dis-Chem is renowned for across South Africa.
You will play a direct role in the day-to-day operational rhythm of the store — from receiving and unpacking stock and managing expiry dates, to processing customer transactions, handling returns, and maintaining the high housekeeping standards that define the Dis-Chem shopping experience. This is a role for someone who takes pride in their work, holds themselves accountable, and genuinely enjoys helping customers.
The ideal candidate holds a Matric certificate and has between 0 and 6 months of retail experience. You are physically active, detail-oriented, numerically competent, and comfortable working in a fast-paced retail environment with minimal oversight. Candidates with 1 year of retail experience will be at an advantage.
This role is well-suited to candidates based in or near Stellenbosch, Western Cape who are looking for a meaningful entry point into one of South Africa’s most respected pharmacy and health retail brands.

Key Responsibilities
Merchandising & Shelf Management
- Ensure that full ranges of products are on the shelves at all times and presented neatly in accordance with Dis-Chem’s merchandising standards.
- Maintain stock on shelves to ensure no products have reached or exceeded their sell-by date, removing expired stock promptly and reporting to management.
- Restock merchandise when needed to ensure maximum product availability and sales potential at all times.
- Ensure delivered stock and stock pulled from the storeroom are stored and packed in the correct allocated space.
- Ensure merchandise displays, labels, and pricing are correct at all times and report all price discrepancies to management without delay.
- Facilitate regular stock rotation and adhere to Dis-Chem’s stock control procedures to minimise waste and ensure freshness.
- Assist with the loading and off-loading of stock when required, and ensure boxes are flattened after unpacking and taken to the designated area.
- Ensure the storeroom is kept organised, neat, and tidy at all times in line with Dis-Chem’s housekeeping standards.
Stock Control & Inventory Support
- Report low stock levels, out-of-stock items, damaged stock, and expired stock to management immediately upon identification.
- Identify and report damaged and expired stock to management as soon as it is discovered on the shelf or in the storeroom.
- Assist with the counting of stock files and general stocktaking as required by management.
- Handle all merchandise carefully at all times to prevent any stock losses or damage.
- Follow up on out-of-stock customer queries in line with the customer service out-of-stock list, ensuring they are addressed in a timeous manner.
Point of Sale & Transaction Processing
- Transact all customer purchases by receiving, verifying, and processing all accepted payment methods — including cash, cards, vouchers, coupons, and any other acceptable payment forms.
- Process all loyalty cards, including those of Dis-Chem’s accelerated loyalty partners.
- Ensure all line voids and price changes are approved and signed by a Frontshop Leader and/or Retail Store Assistant before being processed.
- Exchange merchandise and accept returned goods from customers when authorised to do so by the Frontshop Leader.
- Ensure accurate cash flow at all times and keep daily takings — including cash, vouchers, card slips, line voids, and incomplete dockets — inside the till drawer until placed in the drop safe.
- Ensure cash is placed in the drop safe according to standard operating procedures.
- Ensure that all outgoing stock, items, and scripts are scanned and paid for before leaving the store.
Customer Service & Engagement
- Establish a professional relationship with customers and provide friendly, helpful, courteous assistance and advice at every interaction.
- Keep up to date with new product knowledge to effectively assist customers with informed, accurate recommendations.
- Report customer compliments and complaints to management promptly and professionally.
- Adhere to the customer turnover per hour rate as per company benchmark, ensuring efficient service throughout the trading day.
Team Support & General Operations
- Assist with back shopping when required.
- Assist with the training of new and current team members as directed by management.
- Report bad and suspicious behaviour from both staff and customers to management immediately.
- Ensure housekeeping is maintained in accordance with Dis-Chem’s standards throughout the store at all times.
- Adhere to all Dis-Chem policies, standard operating procedures, health and safety rules and regulations, and the Dis-Chem uniform and personal appearance policy at all times.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
- Grade 12 / Matric or Senior Certificate — essential.
Experience
- 0 to 6 months of retail work experience — essential.
- 1 year of retail work experience — advantageous.
Technical Skills
- Basic computer skills — proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook; SAP experience advantageous.
- Sound numerical skills — able to comprehend and apply fundamental arithmetic including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
