About the Role

The Van Assistant at RCL Foods supports the Driver Salesman in the daily transportation, delivery, and collection of goods across the assigned route. This is a physically demanding, operationally active role that involves significant heavy lifting, the dropping and collecting of bread crates, maintaining strict security and control over all goods in transit, and ensuring that all items — products and vehicles — are handled with care and accountability. The Van Assistant is also responsible for daily vehicle checks, accurate record-keeping, vehicle security, and liaising with shop managers over stock movements between stores.

This role is best suited to someone who is physically fit, punctual, dependable, and takes pride in getting the job done correctly every day. RCL Foods is a business that sees and does things differently — and the Van Assistant is a frontline representative of that commitment to quality, reliability, and community impact on every route they cover.

Please note: This role involves a large amount of heavy lifting on a daily basis. Candidates must be physically fit and capable of safely lifting and moving stock throughout the working day.

Key Responsibilities of a Van Assistant

Stock Transportation & Delivery

  • Assist the Driver Salesman in transporting goods as directed by the Manager, ensuring all deliveries are completed accurately, on time, and in good condition.
  • Drop and collect bread crates as required along the assigned delivery route, handling all items with care and efficiency.
  • Maintain strict security and control over all goods collected, transported, and delivered — ensuring that no stock is misplaced, lost, or unaccounted for at any point during the route.
  • Perform a significant amount of heavy lifting in picking up and moving stock throughout the daily distribution run, adhering to safe manual handling practices at all times.

Stock Loss Prevention & Goods Handling

  • Ensure that minimum losses are incurred on goods and furniture through the careful and respectful handling of all items in transit and at delivery points.
  • Transport unwanted items to the recycling centre or refuse site as appropriate, in line with company environmental and operational procedures.
  • Liaise with shop managers over the movements of stock between shops as delivered by the Driver Salesman, ensuring accurate communication and handover at every stop.

Vehicle Checks & Roadworthiness Reporting

  • Carry out regular daily vehicle checks before and during the route, identifying and reporting any defects that may affect the roadworthiness of any motor vehicle allocated to you.
  • Report all vehicle defects to the relevant supervisor or fleet manager promptly and accurately, ensuring that no roadworthy concerns are left unaddressed.
  • Act as the key holder for the allocated vehicle and assume responsibility for the out-of-hours security of the vehicle — ensuring it is left securely at the end of every shift. This responsibility concludes when the vehicle is left on site overnight.

Administration & Record-Keeping

  • Maintain timely and accurate records in accordance with company policies and procedures, with particular regard to the Shop Manual and route administration requirements.
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures relevant to the Van Assistant role, including stock handling, delivery documentation, and vehicle management.
  • Ensure all required delivery and collection documentation is completed correctly at every stop along the route.

Customer Engagement & Compliance

  • Assist shops in achieving their sales conversion targets by maximising new donor or customer sign-ups when collecting stock, furniture, or other items from customers where applicable.
  • Represent RCL Foods professionally and positively in all customer-facing interactions along the delivery route, upholding the brand’s commitment to quality and community impact.
  • Ensure full adherence to all policies and procedures governing the Van Assistant role, including safety, stock security, and vehicle management obligations.

Core Values We Look For in a Van Assistant

Physical Reliability & Daily Consistency

A delivery route depends on every team member showing up physically capable, focused, and ready to work from the first crate to the last. We look for Van Assistants who bring consistent energy and effort to every shift — who handle heavy stock safely and efficiently, who keep pace with the Driver Salesman throughout the route, and who understand that reliability on the road directly affects product availability and customer satisfaction.

Stock Security & Personal Accountability

The Van Assistant is entrusted with the security of RCL Foods’ products from the moment they are loaded onto the vehicle until the moment they are delivered and receipted. We value team members who take this responsibility seriously — who maintain strict control over goods at every stop, who report discrepancies honestly and immediately, and who never compromise on the integrity of the stock in their care.

Safe Handling & Operational Care

Heavy lifting, crate stacking, vehicle checks, and goods handling all carry physical risk if not approached correctly. We value Van Assistants who follow safe manual handling practices consistently, who report vehicle defects without delay, and who treat every piece of equipment and every product with the care and respect that protects both their own safety and the integrity of RCL Foods’ delivery operation.

Professional Customer & Shop Engagement

The Van Assistant is often the first RCL Foods team member a shop manager or customer interacts with on delivery day. We value individuals who represent the brand with professionalism and courtesy — who communicate clearly, who complete handovers accurately, and who contribute positively to the commercial relationships that keep RCL Foods’ products on shelves and in communities.

Team Contribution & Supportive Work Ethic

The relationship between the Driver Salesman and the Van Assistant is built on trust, teamwork, and a shared commitment to completing the route to the required standard. We value Van Assistants who support their Driver Salesman proactively, who communicate openly about route challenges, who assist with administrative tasks willingly, and who take genuine pride in being a dependable, valued member of the distribution team.

Career Growth Opportunities in Food Manufacturing Operations & Distribution

Starting as a Van Assistant at RCL Foods provides a practical foundation in food distribution, logistics, and operations. For reliable, high-performing individuals who show initiative and commitment, the progression pathway within the distribution and operations function is clear:

  • Van Assistant → Driver Salesman / Route Salesman

Your career path is in your hands.
