Frequently Asked Questions – Handyman Government Jobs Eastern Cape 2026
Do I need a Matric or Grade 12 to apply for this Handyman post? No — a Matric or Grade 12 is not required. The minimum qualification is a Grade 9 or NQF Level 1 certificate — making this post one of the most accessible permanent government jobs in the Eastern Cape in 2026. Candidates who completed school up to Grade 9 and have 1–2 years of farm or fence-making experience are fully eligible to apply.
What is a Competency Certificate in fence making and where can I get one? A Competency Certificate in fence making is an accredited training certificate that confirms practical skills in the construction and repair of agricultural and farm fencing — including tensioning wire, setting posts, installing gates, and maintaining different fence types (jackal-proof, game, camp fencing, etc.). It is listed as recommended for this post — meaning it will strengthen your application but is not a hard requirement to apply. Certificates are available through various TVET colleges, agricultural training institutions, and AGRISETA-accredited training providers across the Eastern Cape and nationally.
What is GADI and what type of farm work will I be doing there? GADI (Grootfontein Agricultural Development Institute) is a Department of Agriculture government research farm and training institution in Middelburg, Eastern Cape — one of South Africa’s oldest agricultural research stations, known particularly for its work on livestock production (sheep and cattle), pasture management, and lucerne production. As a Handyman at GADI, you will maintain the farm’s extensive fencing network, irrigation systems, livestock paddocks, buildings, and trial infrastructure — directly supporting the agricultural research, training, and demonstration activities that make GADI one of the Eastern Cape’s most important government agricultural facilities.
What does “harvesting of lucerne” involve and will I need prior experience? Lucerne (alfalfa) is a perennial fodder crop grown on irrigation and harvested multiple times per year to provide feed for livestock. Harvesting involves operating or assisting with the cutting, drying, baling, and storing of lucerne — typically using mechanical equipment alongside manual labour. Prior lucerne experience is advantageous but not listed as a hard requirement — candidates with general farm labour experience will be able to learn the lucerne harvesting process on the job at GADI.
The application address is Pretoria — does that mean the job is in Pretoria? No — the work location is Middelburg, Eastern Cape at the GADI research farm.
