What Does a Dispensary Manager Do?
The Dispensary Manager is responsible for overseeing all dispensary operations, including staff supervision, medication management, and ensuring compliance with pharmaceutical regulations. This role focuses on delivering high-quality pharmaceutical care while maintaining operational efficiency and regulatory compliance.
You will play a critical role in ensuring patients receive the correct medication, guidance, and professional support in a fast-paced retail pharmacy environment.
Key Responsibilities of a Dispensary Manager
Dispensary Operations & Compliance
- Manage and supervise dispensary and self-medication areas
- Ensure compliance with Good Pharmacy Practice regulations
- Monitor stock levels and ensure no expired or short-dated stock is available
- Handle stock ordering and prepare for stocktakes
- Investigate and manage negative stock daily
Medication Control & Accuracy
- Interpret prescriptions accurately and in line with SAPC regulations
- Ensure correct dispensing, labelling, and packaging of medication
- Provide patients with clear instructions on medication usage
- Monitor drug interactions and dosage accuracy
Inventory & Stock Management
- Maintain accurate stock records and inventory control
- Ensure Schedule 6 medicines are securely stored and registers maintained
- Dispose of expired stock correctly and maintain compliance standards
Medical Aid & Administration
- Process claims and ensure accurate submission to medical aids
- Stay updated on medical aid procedures and requirements
- Manage patient profiles and ensure accurate system records
- Handle authorisations for chronic, HIV, AIDS, and oncology medication
Team Leadership & Training
- Supervise and train dispensary staff and assistants
- Ensure staff operate within their scope of practice
- Lead by example and maintain high service standards
- Manage conflict and ensure effective teamwork
Minimum Requirements – Dispensary Manager
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Educational Qualifications:
- Grade 12 (Matric)
- BPharm or equivalent qualification
Professional Registration:
- Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC)
- Registered tutor
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Sound numerical and problem-solving abilities
- Knowledge of dosing and drug interactions
- Ability to supervise and train staff
- Computer literacy (MS Office)
Work Requirements:
- Willing and able to work retail hours
- Physically fit and able to stand for long periods
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transport
- Clear criminal and credit record
- South African citizenship or valid work eligibility
Advantageous (Not Essential):
- Previous management experience (7+ staff)
- Retail or FMCG experience
- Knowledge of Unisolv, SAP, and e-scripting
- Additional language skills
