What Does a Cosmetic Consultant Do?

A Cosmetic Consultant at Dis-Chem is responsible for the effective promotion and selling of Dis-Chem’s cosmetic and beauty product range through excellent, consistent customer service. You will conduct product demonstrations, makeovers and fragrance promotions, manage your department’s stock and merchandising, and drive sales against brand and vendor targets.

This is a sales-driven, customer-facing role that blends product expertise with a genuine passion for beauty, fragrance and personal care — and rewards strong performers with commission earnings.

Key Responsibilities of a Cosmetic Consultant

Customer Service & Sales

Provide a consistently high level of customer care and service to every customer.
Demonstrate products through makeovers, cosmetics demonstrations, spray promotions and in-store activities.
Maximise store income by achieving department, brand and vendor sales targets.
Be responsible for all cosmetics, fragrance and beauty house promotions.
Keep up to date with products, brands and developments in the retail beauty industry.
Escalate serious or unresolved customer complaints to the manager promptly.

Merchandising & Display

Ensure all cosmetic and beauty merchandising and displays are set up attractively and in line with brand standards.
Maintain a visually appealing department that draws customer attention and supports sales.

Stock Management

Manage stock levels in accordance with Dis-Chem procedures.
Report on short, damaged and expired stock to the manager.
Ensure correct stock rotation and management of expired or damaged items.

Salon & Appointment Management

Manage salon appointments efficiently and professionally.
Coordinate bookings in line with store scheduling and customer demand.

Compliance & Administration

Adhere to all Dis-Chem policies, procedures, SOPs and health and safety rules and regulations.
Understand and work with stock reports, sales targets and commission calculations.
Work according to a structured task schedule.

Minimum Requirements – Cosmetic Consultant

To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Educational Qualifications

Grade 12 / Matric certificate (essential)

Experience

Retail experience as a sales consultant (essential)
Cosmetic, fragrance and/or beauty experience (advantageous)

Skills & Competencies

Computer literate (essential)
Strong command of the English language — written and oral
Ability to understand stock reports, sales targets and commission calculations
Strong customer service orientation
Ability to work according to a task schedule
Strong team player

Special Conditions

Willing and able to work retail hours including weekends and public holidays
Valid driver’s licence and own reliable transport
South African citizen
Clear credit and criminal records

Advantageous (Not Essential)

Previous experience in promotions, personal selling, sales targets, customer liaison and product knowledge
Previous sales and promotional training
Experience managing expired and damaged stock and ensuring stock rotation
Stock management experience
Bilingual (any additional South African language)
