What Does a Casual Cashier Do?

A Casual Cashier at Dis-Chem is the face of the store at point of sale. Your primary responsibility is to deliver a world-class shopping experience for every customer by processing transactions accurately, handling all payment methods professionally, and ensuring full compliance with Dis-Chem’s cash handling policies and security procedures.

This is a customer-facing, high-accountability role that demands accuracy, emotional intelligence, and a zero-tolerance approach to fraud and cashier errors.


Key Responsibilities of a Casual Cashier

Customer Service & Point of Sale

  • Adhere to Dis-Chem’s customer service policies and procedures at all times.
  • Establish and maintain a professional relationship with every customer.
  • Carry out and manage Dis-Chem’s 5-star communication principles.
  • Address customer queries regarding store merchandise promptly and professionally.
  • Report all customer complaints and compliments to the Frontline Supervisor or store management.
  • Adhere to the customer turnover hourly rate and be aware of current sales and promotions.

Transaction Processing & Payments

  • Transact all purchases — receive and process all accepted payment methods including cash, bank cards, vouchers, coupons and other forms of payment.
  • Process all loyalty cards including Discovery Health Care, Medihelp Lifestage, Momentum Multiply, Legacy Lifestyle, ABSA Rewards and eBucks.
  • Ensure all line voids and price changes are approved and signed off by the supervisor before processing.
  • Exchange merchandise and accept returned goods when authorised to do so.
  • Ensure all outgoing stock, items and scripts are scanned and paid for.

Cash Handling & Security

  • Be responsible for accurate cash flow at your till at all times.
  • Ensure all money is strictly kept safely and securely inside the till.
  • Place cash in the drop safe in accordance with Dis-Chem’s SOPs.
  • Handle daily takings with strict confidentiality — discuss only with management.
  • Ensure your till code and password are restricted to you, kept secure, and changed regularly.
  • Adhere to all Dis-Chem security policies and procedures.
  • Be alert, recognise and report suspicious behaviour to management immediately.
  • Ensure colleagues and customers are not exposed to any risk.

Minimum Requirements – Casual Cashier

Educational Qualifications

  • Grade 12 / Matric certificate (essential)

Experience

  • Minimum 6 months’ cashier or till operations experience (essential)

Skills & Competencies

  • Computer literate — MS Office (essential)
  • Sound numerical skills and strong accuracy at point of sale
  • Strong command of the English language (written and oral)
  • In-depth knowledge of operating cash registers and maintaining cash drawers
  • Knowledge of processing sales, refunds and payments
