What Does a Receiving Clerk Do?

A Receiving Clerk at Dis-Chem is responsible for the accurate and efficient receiving, capturing and packing of stock at the store level. You will verify incoming deliveries against invoices, capture goods on the system, process supplier returns, and support the Receiving Manager in keeping the receiving department running smoothly and in full compliance with Dis-Chem’s SOPs.

This is a physical, hands-on role that requires strong numerical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work at pace in a busy retail receiving environment.


Key Responsibilities of a Receiving Clerk

Goods Receiving & Verification

  • Accurately verify, scan and capture all physical goods received for the store in accordance with company policy and SOPs.
  • Receive all warehouse goods and invoices in line with company policy and procedures.
  • Verify and check deliveries and invoices for total accuracy — quantities, variants and condition.
  • Ensure goods delivered are the goods invoiced and captured.
  • Ensure all deliveries are receipted the same day and stock is sent to the trading floor without delay.

Returns & Credit Notes

  • Return all unordered or damaged goods delivered to the store.
  • Accurately complete credit notes for non-acceptance in accordance with company policy and SOPs.
  • Process all returns to suppliers in compliance with company SOPs.
  • Assist the Receiving Manager in preparing and logging warehouse claims on the warehouse claims system.

Stock Control & Housekeeping

  • Ensure all physical controls over the goods receiving area are in place and operational at all times.
  • Maintain storerooms in an acceptable and orderly condition.
  • Assist in managing and controlling high-risk stock.

Minimum Requirements – Receiving Clerk

Educational Qualifications

  • Grade 12 / Matric certificate (essential)

Skills & Competencies

  • Computer literate (essential)
  • Sound numerical skills (essential)
  • Strong command of the English language
  • Knowledge of receiving operating procedures and administration
  • Sound analytical skills and strong attention to detail
  • Effective time management
  • Able to communicate effectively with suppliers, management, reps and staff

Special Conditions

  • Willing and able to work retail hours including weekends and public holidays
  • Physically fit and able to lift and move heavy boxes (20kg+)
  • Reliable transport and/or reside in close proximity to the Waterfall store
