What Does a Receiving Manager Do?
A Receiving Manager at Dis-Chem is responsible for overseeing the accurate and efficient receipt of all incoming goods at the store. You will manage the full receiving department — from verifying deliveries and processing invoices on SAP, to handling supplier returns and leading a team of Receiving Clerks and Store Men.
This is a hands-on management role that requires strong attention to detail, solid administrative skills, and the confidence to lead and develop a team in a high-volume retail environment.
Key Responsibilities of a Receiving Manager
Goods Receiving & Verification
- Accurately verify, scan and capture all physical goods receipts in accordance with company policy and SOPs.
- Ensure goods delivered match invoices in terms of quantities, variants and condition.
- Prevent and return all unordered or damaged goods; accurately complete credit notes for non-acceptance.
- Ensure all deliveries are receipted the same day and stock flows promptly to the trading floor.
Returns & Supplier Management
- Despatch all supplier returns on presentation of a valid pick-up slip in compliance with company SOPs.
- Prepare and log warehouse claims on the warehouse claims system.
- Oversee the full return policy: credit notes, supplier returns, warehouse credits and monthly vendor return lists.
- Follow up with supplier representatives to minimise outstanding return balances.
- Ensure the SL02 returns-to-vendor inventory list and ME2L open return orders agree to physical goods on hand.
SAP Capturing & Document Control
- Create and capture purchase orders for the store on SAP across all sources.
- Capture (MIRA) all goods-received invoices in compliance with operating policies.
- Accurately verify and check all invoices prior to submission.
- Ensure effective document flow, including capturing and filing of all records.
- Prepare invoice packs for submission to head office in the prescribed format.
- Execute the warehouse credits process per company operating procedures.
Stock Control & Physical Controls
- Ensure all physical controls over the goods receiving area are in place and operational.
- Manage and control high-risk stock.
- Prevent unauthorised access to the store via the goods receiving area.
- Support the Assistant and Store Manager in maintaining orderly storerooms.
Team Leadership & Development
- Mentor, train and develop Receiving/Capturing Clerks and Store Men to meet and continually improve on company performance standards.
- Manage staff scheduling, performance management and development plans.
- Conduct regular performance reviews and staff development planning.
Minimum Requirements – Receiving Manager

Educational Qualifications
- Grade 12 / Matric certificate (essential)
Experience
- Minimum 3 years’ relevant retail receiving experience (essential)
- Minimum 2 years’ supervisory or management experience over a team of at least 6 staff (advantageous)
Skills & Competencies
- Computer literate — MS Office proficiency (essential)
- Working knowledge of SAP retail or warehouse module (advantageous)
- Strong command of the English language (written and verbal)
- Basic financial skills — GP, mark-up, VAT calculations
- Strong analytical skills and deadline-driven work ethic
- Effective communication with suppliers, management, reps and staff
Special Conditions
- Willing and able to work retail hours including weekends and public holidays
- Physically fit and able to lift and move heavy boxes (20kg+)
- Valid driver’s licence and own reliable transport
- South African citizen
- Clear credit and criminal records
Advantageous (Not Essential)
- Experience operating a stock rotation system
- Basic accounting knowledge
- Bilingual (any additional South African language)
