What Does a Court Typist Do?
Court Typists are essential to the administration of justice in South Africa’s High Courts. In this role, you will be responsible for typing legal documents and court records, compiling court rolls, maintaining registers, and providing general administrative support — ensuring that all documentation is produced accurately, timeously, and in line with court procedures and legal requirements.
This is a precision-driven, legally sensitive role that requires strong typing ability, knowledge of legal terminology, and the ability to deliver accurate work under pressure in a busy High Court environment.

Key Responsibilities of a Typist
Legal Document Typing
- Type appeals, reviews, reports, minutes, circulars, and notices of set downs.
- Type witness statements, taxing master reports, affidavits, memorandums, and court orders.
- Ensure all typed documents are accurate, correctly formatted, and meet court standards.
- Produce documents at a minimum typing speed of 35 words per minute.
Court Roll Compilation
- Compile term rolls, week rolls, and unopposed and opposed motion rolls.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date registers as required by the court.
- Ensure all rolls are prepared timeously and distributed to the relevant court officials.
Orders & Judgments
- Compile and submit relevant court orders and judgments to the relevant stakeholders.
- Ensure all orders and judgments are correctly captured and distributed in accordance with court procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of all orders and judgments processed.
Filing & Records Management
- Manage filing systems — opening new files and maintaining existing court records.
- Retrieve files and documents on request from Judges, court officials, and administrative staff.
- Ensure all files are stored accurately, securely, and in accordance with departmental policies.
Reception & Public Queries
- Deal with public queries professionally, courteously, and timeously.
- Make appointments and assist members of the public with general court-related enquiries.
- Provide front-of-office counter services as required.
Relief Administrative Support
- Provide relief administrative support to court personnel where necessary.
- Assist with general administrative duties across the court component as directed.
- Support colleagues and supervisors with any ad hoc tasks required by the court.
Minimum Requirements – Typist
To be considered for this Typist position, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Educational Qualifications:
- Grade 12 certificate or equivalent qualification
Technical Requirements:
- Minimum typing speed of 35 words per minute (wpm)
- Computer literacy — proficient in MS Word
Knowledge Requirements:
- Knowledge of legal terminology, court procedures, rules, and the court environment
- Knowledge of counter services and court filing systems
- Understanding of legislation governing the Public Service
- Knowledge of Batho Pele Principles and the Public Service Regulations (PSR)
Skills & Competencies:
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Good interpersonal relations and professional conduct
- Planning and organisation skills
