Frequently Asked Questions – Service Man Mining Jobs
What is the difference between a Service Man and an Artisan in a mining context? In South African mining terminology, an Artisan is a fully qualified tradesperson — holding a formal NAMB trade test certificate in a specific trade (Boilermaker, Fitter, Electrician, Millwright, etc.) — and is legally authorised to perform, sign off, and take professional responsibility for the work performed. A Service Man is the skilled assistant who supports the Artisan — performing preparatory, routine, and supervised maintenance work under the Artisan’s oversight. The Service Man role is the practical development pathway toward Artisan qualification — providing the hands-on engineering experience that, combined with formal trade training, leads to a NAMB trade test and full Artisan status.
What is the Mine Service Man qualification? The Mine Service Man is a formal QCTO/MHSA-recognised occupational certificate specific to the South African mining industry — issued after completing accredited training and practical assessment covering mine maintenance support, SHEQ in mining, rigging, and engineering support activities on mine sites. Holding a Mine Service Man certificate demonstrates formal competency in mining maintenance support beyond general engineering experience — and is listed as an advantage for this Fraser Alexander post because it confirms mining-specific SHEQ and procedural knowledge.
What is Advanced Mine Rigging and why is it advantageous? Advanced Mine Rigging is a MHSA (Mine Health and Safety Act) and QCTO-accredited certification covering the safe planning and execution of complex lifting operations on mine sites — including the selection and use of lifting equipment, load calculations, sling configurations, crane signals, and permit-to-lift procedures. Advanced Mine Rigging is specifically required for lifting operations above basic crane/hoist work — and candidates with this certification can take responsibility for more complex material and equipment lifts on Fraser Alexander’s tailings and infrastructure sites.
What are tailings and why does Fraser Alexander specialise in them? Tailings are the waste materials remaining after ore is processed to extract valuable minerals — typically a slurry of water, fine rock particles, and residual chemicals. Tailings must be safely contained in engineered tailings storage facilities (TSFs) — large dams or impoundments constructed to prevent environmental contamination and structural failure. Fraser Alexander specialises in constructing, managing, and rehabilitating these tailings facilities — one of the most technically demanding and safety-critical engineering disciplines in the global mining industry. The Service Man supports the maintenance of structural steelwork, pipelines, and equipment on these sites.
