Purpose of the Role

The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood and non-blood specimens with precision and compassion — ensuring every patient interaction reflects Ampath’s highest standards of care, safety, and professional excellence. Key Responsibilities – Phlebotomist

Specimen Collection & Phlebotomy

  • Perform phlebotomy procedures — including venepuncture and capillary blood collection — confidently, safely, and compassionately on patients of all ages and clinical presentations.
  • Collect non-blood specimens — including urine, swabs, and other biological samples — in accordance with Ampath’s collection protocols and the specific requirements of each test requested.
  • Prioritise patient safety, comfort, and dignity throughout every specimen collection interaction — particularly with anxious, paediatric, or elderly patients.
  • Identify and apply the correct collection technique, container, and labelling requirements for each specific test — ensuring specimen integrity from the moment of collection.

  • Use digital tools confidently and accurately to manage patient data and support seamless service delivery throughout the Care Centre.

  • Build trust with patients, carers, and the broader Alberton community through consistent excellence, empathy, and reliability.
  • Serve as a key ambassador of the Ampath brand — representing the company’s values of precision, care, and patient-centred service in every patient-facing moment.

Safety, Quality & Compliance

  • Perform all phlebotomy procedures in strict accordance with infection control, sharps safety, and occupational health and safety standards.
  • Maintain the Care Centre environment to the highest standards of hygiene, safety, and professional presentation.
  • Adhere to all HPCSA / SANC professional conduct standards and Ampath’s internal quality management requirements in every aspect of the role.

Frequently Asked Questions – Phlebotomist Jobs South Africa

Can I apply with SANC registration rather than HPCSA? Yes. The vacancy explicitly accepts either HPCSA registration (as a Phlebotomist or allied health professional) or SANC (South African Nursing Council) registration — reflecting that qualified, registered nurses with phlebotomy competency and experience are equally eligible candidates for this role. Both HPCSA and SANC registered professionals with the required 4 years of experience are encouraged to apply.

What does “non-blood specimen collection” involve? Non-blood specimens include urine samples (midstream clean catch, 24-hour collections), throat and nasal swabs, wound swabs, stool samples, and other biological materials collected without venepuncture. The Phlebotomist at a Care Centre is typically responsible for the full range of specimen types requested by referring clinicians — not only blood.

What digital systems will I use? Ampath uses laboratory information and patient management systems for specimen registration, test ordering, and result tracking. Specific system names will be confirmed during onboarding. Basic computer literacy and a willingness to learn new digital tools are the essential requirements — full system training will be provided.

Is 4 years’ experience strictly required? Yes — 4 years of phlebotomy or related clinical experience is listed as an essential requirement. This reflects the level of patient care complexity, procedural confidence, and professional judgement expected in a Care Centre environment that serves a diverse community population independently.

What is Verwoerdpark Care Centre? Verwoerdpark is a residential suburb in Alberton, on the southern East Rand of Gauteng. The Ampath Care Centre in Verwoerdpark is a community-facing patient service point — providing specimen collection, patient registration, and basic diagnostic services to the surrounding Alberton community — as part of Ampath’s nationwide network of over 300 collection and service points.
