About the Role
This is a meaningful, patient-facing pharmaceutical role that goes well beyond administrative dispensary support. As a Post Basic Qualified Pharmacist Assistant at Dis-Chem, you will be an integral part of the dispensary team — directly involved in the preparation, labelling, dispensing, and distribution of medicines, and accountable for ensuring that every patient receives accurate, safe, and well-explained pharmaceutical care.
You will work within a structured dispensary environment under the supervision and evaluation of a responsible pharmacist, assisting across the full spectrum of dispensary operations — from script interpretation and stock management to patient counselling, medical aid claims processing, and chronic medication authorisation. The standard is high, the responsibility is real, and the impact on patients’ lives is direct.
The ideal candidate holds a Basic Pharmacist Assistance qualification, is registered with the SAPC, and has working experience on Unisolv. You are detail-obsessed, numerically sound, trustworthy, and able to manage the pressure of a busy dispensary environment without compromising accuracy or patient care.
This role is well-suited to candidates based in or near Hartbeespoort, North West who are looking for a permanent position within one of South Africa’s most respected pharmaceutical retail groups.

Key Responsibilities
Dispensing & Pharmaceutical Care
- Assist with the sale of Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 medicines or scheduled substances in accordance with all relevant legislative and SAPC requirements.
- Assist with the compounding, manipulation, and preparation of non-sterile medicines or scheduled substances according to formulae and standard operating procedures approved by the responsible pharmacist.
- Assist with the manufacturing of non-sterile medicines or scheduled substances according to approved formulae and SOPs.
- Assist with the re-packaging of medicine in appropriate containers in line with dispensary protocols.
- Assist with the reading and preparation of prescriptions — including the selection, manipulation, compounding, labelling, and supply of medicine — following interpretation and evaluation by a pharmacist.
- Accurately interpret scripts and act in a professional, responsible manner within all legal requirements and SAPC guidelines at all times.
- Ensure accurate picking, packing, labelling, and checking of medication, with full awareness of common dosages and critical drug interactions.
- Ensure all medications are checked for accuracy and signed off by a pharmacist before being dispensed to patients.
Patient Interaction & Counselling
- Give accurate instructions to patients regarding the correct use of medicine supplied, ensuring patient safety and compliance.
- Advise and assist patients at the dispensary, self-medication counter, and front shop in a professional and caring manner.
- Explain medical aid costs to patients clearly and transparently, ensuring they understand their out-of-pocket obligations.
- Provide health promotion information to patients and individuals to support broader wellness outcomes.
- Follow up with patients regarding script tracking reports as requested by the dispensary manager, and follow up on scheduled appointments.
Script Processing & Medical Aid Administration
- Capture script details accurately and verify patients’ details on the dispensary system.
- Process all paperwork necessary for the accurate submission of claims to medical aids, ensuring zero errors and full compliance.
- Correct errors on scripts rejected by medical aids promptly and efficiently to minimise disruption to patient care.
- Ensure the authorisation of chronic, HIV and AIDS, and oncology medication in line with medical aid scheme requirements.
- Keep abreast of changes in medical aid procedures and requirements for claims and dispensing to ensure continued accuracy and compliance.
Customer Profile & Records Management
- Maintain accurate customer profiles on the dispensary system, ensuring all information is current and complete.
- Merge profiles locally and notify UCS to merge profiles centrally where required.
- Take note of any messages on customer profiles and take suitable and timely action in response.
Stock Management & Dispensary Operations
- Report low or out-of-stock levels and stock errors to the dispensary manager promptly to prevent supply disruptions.
- Receive dispensary stock in accordance with Dis-Chem’s SOPs and merchandise according to FEFO (First Expiry, First Out) principles.
- Assist with the distribution and control of stock of Schedule 1 to Schedule 5 medicines or scheduled substances.
- Assist with the ordering of medicines and scheduled substances up to and including Schedule 6 according to instructions from authorised persons under the Medicines Act.
- Facilitate bi-annual stock takes and exercise sound stock, cash, and asset control throughout the year.

Qualifications
- Grade 12 / Matric — essential.
- Basic Pharmacist Assistance qualification — essential.
- Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) — essential and non-negotiable.
Experience & Technical Skills
- Working experience on Unisolv — essential.
- Computer literate — proficient in MS Office.
