What Does an Operations Supervisor Do at Fraser Alexander?
Operations Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that all site tasks are carried out on shift with regard to Safety, Environment, and Productivity. In this role, you will assist the Superintendent and other line managers with the efficient and effective running of the site — supervising shift teams, executing operational and technical duties, managing SHEQ compliance, contributing to shift scheduling, maintaining management operating systems, and ensuring all work meets Fraser Alexander’s technical and quality standards.
This is a hands-on, multi-disciplinary supervisory role that requires a National Diploma or BTech in Civil, Mining, Metallurgical, or Industrial Engineering, 1–2 years of mining or tailings environment experience, and solid technical knowledge of the tailings industry and its applicable legislation.
Key Responsibilities of an Operations Supervisor
Business & Functional Management
- Execute operational and technical duties in line with organisational directives and project goals.
- Support the implementation of business initiatives as directed within the area of responsibility.
Financial, Commercial & Cost Management
- Work with materials and equipment in a cost-effective manner, in accordance with standard operating procedures and practice notes as directed by the line manager.
- Ensure full compliance with material usage requirements in executing all assigned duties.
SHEQ & Risk Compliance
- Execute all duties in strict compliance with Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) policies, procedures, and legislation to ensure the company meets its full regulatory responsibilities.
- Comply with all reporting and information requirements as set by the Superintendent.
- Contribute to a culture of safety and continuous improvement for the duration of the project.
Stakeholder Management
- Ensure professional interaction with stakeholders from operator to junior management level.
- Maintain strong working relationships with support functions on site and at head office as required to deliver against standards within the section.
- Align with client culture requirements as directed by management.
Operations & Shift Management
- Contribute to the generation of daily and shift work plans and schedules in line with project goals.
- Take responsibility for the operational execution of work through delivery of own tasks and supervision of the shift team.
- Highlight any deviations or non-compliance that may occur during the shift and escalate appropriately.
Management Operating Systems & Reporting
- Ensure all required paperwork and posters are displayed on the site office wall and kept up to date at all times.
- Ensure all reported near misses are recorded following the correct procedure and submitted weekly.
- Maintain accurate operational records in support of site management and regulatory reporting requirements.
Technical Management & SHEQ Checks
- Ensure adherence to technical standards and work methods for the section in accordance with organisational, client, and legislative requirements.
- Check sums on plan drawings and quantities to verify that all materials and work meet the required specifications.
- Record the condition of plant arriving on site using the prescribed form with photographs.
Staff Supervision & Development
- Supervise shift team members and ensure all duties are executed in full compliance with safety, training, and health requirements.
- Highlight any deviations, performance concerns, or non-compliance to the Superintendent for appropriate action.
Minimum Requirements – Operations Supervisor
To be considered for either Operations Supervisor position, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Educational Qualifications:
- National Diploma or BTech in Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or Industrial Engineering — essential
Experience:
- Minimum 1–2 years of experience working in a mining or tailings environment — essential
- Experience with technical drawings and knowledge of tailings materials — essential
Knowledge Requirements:
- Solid understanding of the mining industry with specific emphasis on the tailings business
- Knowledge and understanding of national legislation, standards, and bylaws applicable to the tailings industry
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of the technical and operational aspects core to the tailings industry
Skills & Competencies:
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and verify quantities against specifications
- Strong operational and supervisory skills — ability to manage a shift team to deliver results
