Maintaining continuous plant availability, optimizing extraction yields, and ensuring strict adherence to food safety standards are vital to sustaining supply chain excellence and brand trust.

As the Mill Manager in Pietermaritzburg, you will take full operational ownership of the facility’s production parameters, asset management, financial budgeting, and workforce safety. You will lead cross-functional milling teams to keep mechanical and milling downtime below strict targets (Wheat & Maize downtime <3.0% and <3.5%), enforce Food Safety recertifications, manage grain insect fumigation protocols, and ensure product quality consistency scores exceed benchmark standards.

Key Responsibilities

Asset Management & Operational Efficiency

• Drive plant throughput to achieve design capacities across wheat and maize milling processes.

• Maintain equipment availability by implementing proactive maintenance schedules and ensuring critical spare parts inventory.

• Keep milling and mechanical downtime below strict targets (<3.0% for wheat milling hours and <3.5% for maize milling hours).

• Resolve high-level technical issues and manage engineering projects within approved budget parameters.

Quality Assurance & Food Safety

• Oversee continuous compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Statistical Quality Control (SQC).

• Maintain Food Safety recertifications and full compliance with relevant agricultural and food production legislation.

• Ensure consistent quality parameters: Super Maize Meal consistency score >800; Cake, White, and Brown Bread Flours consistency score >500.

• Drive continuous reduction in customer complaints through root-cause analysis and quality interventions.

Financial, Inventory & Fumigation Management

• Manage operational expenditure within approved budgets, identifying historical trends to forecast future capital requirements.

• Maintain stock availability to meet commercial demand while avoiding overstocking and minimizing inventory write-offs.

• Manage consumable inventories and implement robust pest control and grain insect fumigation protocols.

Health, Safety, Environment & Risk (SHE)

• Implement and strictly enforce the Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Act, driving towards a zero disabling injuries target.

• Ensure full compliance with Safety, Health, Environment, and Risk standards, minimizing environmental waste and optimizing utility usage.

People Leadership & Industrial Relations

• Direct daily milling operations to foster high morale, strong teamwork, and low employee turnover and absenteeism.

• Maintain a harmonious industrial relations environment with zero IR disputes through fair, transparent leadership.

• Conduct training needs analyses to upskill plant personnel and improve overall operational efficiencies.

Minimum Requirements

Educational Qualifications & Professional Certifications

• Qualified Wheat or Maize Miller with a recognized GMF Trade Test

• Swiss Milling School Qualification, City & Guilds of London (Advanced Flour Milling), or NABIM (National Association of British & Irish Millers) certification

• Production Diploma or Manufacturing Management qualification

Experience & Technical Knowledge

• Minimum of 5 years’ proven experience in a high-volume manufacturing/milling environment, with at least 3 years at a senior management level

• In-depth practical knowledge of grain insect fumigation protocols and grain storage management

• Proven track record in operating high-capacity wheat or maize mills within strict downtime and quality tolerances
