About the Role
As a Laboratory Assistant at PathCare’s Rosepark branch in Bloemfontein, you will play a vital frontline operational role in the receipt, preparation, and distribution of diagnostic specimens.
You will receive patient samples, perform initial specimen preparation, manage Meditech shipping batches to reference laboratories, track incomplete reports, and convey telephonic results to healthcare providers. Working both independently and as part of a shift team, you will ensure strict adherence to PathCare’s SANAS-accredited Quality Management Systems and HPCSA ethical guidelines.

Key Responsibilities of a Laboratory Assistant
Specimen Reception & Processing

Receive, register, and process biological specimens entering the specimen reception department.

Prepare specimens for laboratory testing according to standardized bench procedures.

Ensure accurate, timely distribution of specimens to technical departments to maintain strict Turnaround Times (TAT).

Batch and ship specimens safely to designated reference laboratories using the Meditech system.
Query Handling & Quality Management

Manage specimen on-hold lists, investigate incomplete reports, and resolve challenging laboratory queries.

Provide clear, accurate telephonic pathology results to attending doctors and medical staff when required.

Operate independently in the laboratory environment while maintaining strict quality control standards.

Adhere to HPCSA ethical rules, health and safety regulations, and SANAS accreditation requirements.
Minimum Requirements – Laboratory Assistant
Professional Qualifications & Registration

Grade 12 / Matric Qualification (Essential).

Current registration with the HPCSA as a qualified Laboratory Assistant (Essential).

Computer literacy with proficiency in laboratory software (Essential).

Fluency in English with a functional understanding of Afrikaans (Essential).
Work Experience

Proven experience in a busy medical specimen reception environment (Essential).

Experience using Meditech shipping batches to send and receive samples (Highly Advantageous).

Experience managing on-hold lists, incomplete reports, and telephonic result reporting (Highly Advantageous).
