About the Role

The Instrument Technician is responsible for ensuring maximum plant uptime through effective maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimisation of electrical and control systems across the facility.

This role requires a highly skilled professional with expertise in PLCs, SCADA systems, instrumentation, and industrial automation, capable of diagnosing faults, implementing corrective actions, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate is proactive, technically strong, and committed to maintaining safety, quality, and production efficiency in a fast-paced FMCG environment.


Key Responsibilities of an Instrument Technician

Electrical & Instrumentation Maintenance

  • Perform maintenance on process plant, packaging, palletising, and utilities systems
  • Lead electrical and instrumentation repairs within assigned areas
  • Calibrate, repair, and maintain control and instrumentation equipment
  • Ensure all systems operate within defined performance standards

Automation & Control Systems

  • Maintain and troubleshoot PLCs, SCADA systems, and industrial networks
  • Perform modifications and upgrades to control systems
  • Manage HMI systems, VSDs, servo drives, and robotics
  • Ensure proper backup and documentation of PLC programs

Fault Finding & Continuous Improvement

  • Conduct root cause analysis to reduce downtime and improve reliability
  • Monitor daily downtime and implement corrective action plans
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement
  • Improve equipment control philosophies and performance

Compliance, Safety & Audits

  • Ensure compliance with MESS standards and safety procedures
  • Conduct equipment audits and safety checks
  • Maintain accurate documentation of changes and maintenance activities
  • Ensure adherence to quality and operational standards

Maintenance Planning & Reporting

  • Record all work on SAP maintenance management system
  • Ensure availability of critical spares and components
  • Communicate with production teams to support proactive maintenance
  • Work with contractors and suppliers to complete tasks efficiently

Minimum Requirements – Instrument Technician

Educational Qualifications:

  • Trade Tested Electrician
  • N6/S4 Diploma in Electrical (Instrumentation & Control)

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years’ maintenance experience in FMCG or production environment
  • Proven experience in industrial automation and control systems

Technical Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge of PLCs, SCADA, VSDs, Servo Drives, and HMI systems
  • Experience with robotics and high-speed industrial equipment
  • Strong understanding of instrumentation and electrical diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Experience with industrial communication protocols (Ethernet, CANBUS, RS-232, ASI, Devicenet)
  • Proficiency in SAP maintenance systems and MS Office

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work under pressure in a high-speed production environment
