About the Role

This is a senior milling leadership role for experienced millers who bring both strong technical milling expertise and the ability to lead, develop, and supervise a team of Miller Assistants and Controllers in a high-performance FMCG production environment.

The Head Miller is responsible for supervising milling operations across the shift, compiling mill grists, controlling product quality parameters, planning maintenance and roll changes, and ensuring that all SHEQ, hygiene, and food safety standards are met at all times.

The ideal candidate is a qualified, trade-tested wheat miller with a minimum of 5 years’ practical and theoretical milling experience, at least 2 years in a supervisory role, and a strong track record of driving milling efficiency and team performance in a grain milling environment.


Key Responsibilities of a Head Miller

Production Efficiency & Mill Management

  • Ensure the team consistently reaches set targets including material efficiency, true efficiency, net efficiency, and mill balancing.
  • Compile and execute milling processes and milling procedures for each shift.
  • Compile mill grist and control product quality parameters throughout the shift.
  • Control and optimise people, mill, machinery, and equipment performance continuously.

Maintenance Planning & Roll Changes

  • Plan and coordinate production maintenance activities and roll changes.
  • Maintain the mill, machinery, and equipment to ensure optimal operational availability.
  • Optimise silo screen room machinery to support efficient wheat conditioning and cleaning.

Raw Material & Stock Control

  • Control raw material and finished stock levels and ensure correct stock rotation for the shift.
  • Ensure wheat from silos is cleaned and well conditioned prior to milling.
  • Monitor and manage raw material usage against set efficiency targets.

Team Leadership & Training

  • Supervise the activities of Miller Assistants and Controllers engaged in milling routines.
  • Train new employees and provide ongoing training in SHEQ procedures and principles.
  • Guide and develop Miller Assistants in both practical milling skills and safety compliance.
  • Provide leadership across the shift and relieve Millers when required.

Safety, Health, Hygiene & Pest Management

  • Ensure full compliance with safety, health, hygiene, and pest management standards at all times.
  • Manage the team’s adherence to applicable food safety and health and safety standards including AIB, FSSC22000, and NSF.
  • Ensure housekeeping standards are maintained across all milling areas throughout the shift.

Compliance & Quality Assurance

  • Ensure all milling activities comply with applicable SHEQ, food safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Apply SAP for relevant production, stock, and reporting functions.
  • Maintain quality standards in line with the company’s internal and external audit requirements.

Minimum Requirements – Head Miller

Educational Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 (essential)
  • Wheat Milling course and trade test (essential)
  • Qualification in Advanced Milling (essential)

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ relevant milling experience — practical and theoretical (essential)
  • At least 2 years’ experience in a supervisory role (essential)

Technical Skills:

  • SAP system proficiency
  • Knowledge and application of health and safety standards — AIB, FSSC22000, NSF, and related frameworks
  • Strong understanding of mill grist compilation, product quality control, and milling efficiency management
  • Knowledge of wheat conditioning, silo screen room operations, and stock rotation principles
