About the Role

The Handyman (HVAC) plays a crucial operational role in maintaining heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems across Bidvest Facilities Management client sites in Cape Town. Working within the BFM Operations 1 division, you will fulfill job cards, investigate equipment breakdowns, restore operational failures, and maintain constant communication with clients and facility managers.

This position demands a motivated, safety-conscious technical practitioner with an N3 technical qualification, a safe handling of refrigerants license, and a strong understanding of OHS Act regulations and ISO 9001 quality management frameworks.

Important Technical Requirements: Candidates must possess a N3 Technical Certificate (Electrical/Mechanical), a Matric (Senior Certificate), a Valid South African Driver’s License, and a valid Safe Handling of Refrigerants License. A minimum of 3 years of relevant HVAC handyman maintenance experience is required.

HVAC Maintenance & Emergency Fault Rectification

• Execute planned, preventative, and emergency maintenance on all specified HVAC, cooling, and mechanical building equipment per scheduled job plans.

• Fulfill job card requirements within strict timeframes to guarantee 100% compliance with client SLAs and statutory legislation.

• Conduct thorough technical investigations, hazard evaluations, and restorations of identified HVAC problems and operational failures.

• Provide clear, continuous feedback to clients and Facility Managers regarding equipment status and operational restoration.

Operational Support & Reporting

• Report all irregular occurrences, major equipment defects, and site hazards immediately to the Maintenance Control Centre, Site Manager (SM), or Regional Manager (RC).

• Assist trade artisans (Electricians, Fitters, Refrigeration Mechanics) with complex mechanical repairs and system overhauls as needed.

• Maintain clean work areas, inspect mechanical tools regularly, and undertake related technical tasks assigned by management.

Compliance, Safety & Standards

• Comply strictly with environmental guidelines when handling, recovering, or charging refrigerants in line with your safe handling license.

• Enforce Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act standards, hazard identification rules, and ISO 9001 quality procedures during all maintenance duties.

Educational Qualifications & Certification

• N3 Technical Certificate in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.

• Valid Safe Handling of Refrigerants License.

• Matric (Senior Certificate).

• Valid South African Driver’s License.

Practical Experience & Technical Competencies

• At least 3 years of relevant experience performing HVAC maintenance and technical handyman tasks in commercial or industrial facilities.

• Basic practical training on hand tools, electrical test equipment, and mechanical fitting machinery.

• Practical knowledge of the OHS Act and ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems.
