What Does a Government Groundsman Do?
Groundsmen are essential to the upkeep and presentation of Air Force Base Hoedspruit’s grounds and outdoor facilities. In this role, you will be responsible for cultivating and maintaining garden areas, mowing lawns, irrigating, weeding, pruning, loading and unloading equipment, removing refuse, and maintaining the overall neatness of all unit areas — ensuring the base grounds are kept to a high standard at all times.
This is a physically active, outdoor role that requires a basic ABET qualification, knowledge of basic hand tools and cleaning equipment, and the ability to operate cleaning and grounds maintenance machinery in a structured military environment.
Key Responsibilities of a Groundsman
Garden Cultivation & Planting
- Cultivate garden areas across the base to maintain a neat and well-presented environment.
- Prepare soil for the planting of plants and flowers as directed.
- Maintain flower beds and other garden areas through regular fertilising, irrigating, weeding, and pruning.
Lawn Care & Edging
- Mow lawns across all designated areas of the base regularly.
- Cut edges neatly to maintain a tidy and well-kept appearance throughout the grounds.
- Irrigate lawns as required to maintain healthy grass and plant growth.
Refuse Removal & Grounds Cleaning
- Remove refuse from the terrain and all unit areas on a regular basis.
- Load refuse onto the truck for transportation to refuse dumps or burn refuse as directed.
- Maintain the overall neatness and cleanliness of all unit areas at all times.
Equipment Handling & Loading
- Load and unload various articles and equipment needed on the grounds.
- Handle all equipment and machinery with care and in accordance with operational requirements.
- Operate cleaning machines and basic grounds maintenance equipment safely and correctly.
Health, Safety & General Maintenance
- Apply knowledge of health and safety in all grounds maintenance activities.
- Use basic hand tools and cleaning equipment correctly and safely.
- Perform routine maintenance tasks on machinery of low complexity as required.
- Work effectively both as part of a team and independently as directed by the supervisor.
Minimum Requirements – Groundsman
Educational Qualifications:
- Minimum ABET qualification (essential)
- No prior experience required
Knowledge Requirements:
- Knowledge of health and safety applicable to outdoor and grounds maintenance work
- Knowledge of basic maintenance of machinery with a low level of operating complexity
- Knowledge of basic hand tools and cleaning equipment
