What Does a Government General Worker Do?
General Workers are essential to the upkeep and safe operation of government water infrastructure and associated facilities. In this role, you will be responsible for carrying out general maintenance activities, conducting routine inspections, performing maintenance tasks on dams, canals, pipelines, and buildings, and supporting the operations team — ensuring that all government water infrastructure and surrounding terrain is maintained safely and efficiently in line with OHS regulations.
This is a physically active, outdoor role that requires basic knowledge of general maintenance, gardening, and safe working practices in a government water infrastructure environment.
Key Responsibilities of a General Worker
General Maintenance Activities
- Carry out general maintenance activities including weed control, gardening, and painting.
- Maintain fire breaks and apply herbicides as required and directed by the supervisor.
- Load and offload equipment as required during maintenance and operational activities.
- Assist with any other general duties as and when requested by the supervisor.
Water Infrastructure Maintenance
- Perform maintenance tasks on government water infrastructure and related facilities including canals, pipelines, dams, servitudes, terrain, and buildings.
- Assist with the upkeep of all departmental facilities to ensure safe and efficient operations.
- Apply basic knowledge of maintenance practices for the efficient and safe upkeep of government water infrastructure.
Gardening & Grounds Care
- Handle gardening equipment and appliances correctly and safely.
- Carry out lawn care processes and general groundskeeping as required.
- Maintain the grounds and terrain surrounding departmental infrastructure and facilities.
Routine Inspections
- Conduct general routine inspections on departmental infrastructure as directed.
- Identify faults, defects, and safety hazards during inspections and report promptly to the supervisor.
- Assist with follow-up maintenance tasks arising from inspection findings.
Reporting & Safety Compliance
- Report all faults, defects, and safety hazards to the supervisor promptly.
- Adhere to the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act and all related safety regulations at all times.
- Ensure all maintenance activities are carried out safely and in compliance with departmental policies.
General Support
- Assist the operations team with general duties as and when requested.
- Support colleagues and supervisors across all maintenance and operational activities.
- Ensure all equipment is handled, stored, and maintained correctly after use.
Minimum Requirements – General Worker

Educational Qualifications:
- ABET certificate minimum requirement
- A higher qualification will serve as an added advantage
- Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate relevant work experience in a similar environment
Knowledge Requirements:
