About the Role
As a Driver at BUCO Somerset West, you serve as the direct link between the store and trade clients or homeowners. Your primary focus is ensuring that building products are transported safely, securely, and on schedule without breakages, losses, or inventory shortages.
In addition to safe driving, you will supervise vehicle loading, inspect delivery trucks daily, collect cash-on-delivery (COD) payments, process signed delivery notes, and ensure efficient vehicle maintenance.
Key Performance Areas & Primary Responsibilities
Safe Goods Delivery & Load Securing

Transport building supplies, hardware, timber, and construction products safely to customer job sites and residential addresses across Somerset West and surrounding areas.

Supervise and assist yard assistants with loading trucks to ensure weight is evenly distributed and neatly packed.

Secure all loads with straps and tarpaulins to prevent damages, breakages, or road hazards during transit.

Verify delivery items against invoices and delivery notes to guarantee correct product quantities and specifications are supplied.
Vehicle Maintenance & Cost Efficiency

Perform mandatory pre-trip daily inspection checks on the vehicle (tyres, oil, water, brakes, lights, and load bed).

Report vehicle defects, mechanical faults, or maintenance needs promptly to dispatch managers to reduce long-term vehicle repair costs.

Maintain vehicle cleanliness, tidiness, and operational safekeeping.

Practice fuel-efficient and defensive driving techniques adhering to standard South African road traffic regulations.
Customer Service & Cash Management

Provide professional, polite, and customer-focused service at all delivery locations.

Obtain clear signatures and authorizations on official delivery notes upon completion of drop-offs.

Accurately collect and safe-keep Cash-on-Delivery (COD) monies, handing them back to store finance immediately upon return.

Qualifications & Driver Licensing

Grade 12 / Matric Certificate (Essential).

Valid Driver’s License: Code 8 (LV) or Code 10 (HV) (<16,001 kg) (Essential).

Valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP) (Advantageous).
Experience & Key Competencies

Minimum 2 years of relevant professional driving and delivery experience (Essential).

Previous experience driving light-to-medium commercial vehicles (up to 3,500 kg GVM) carrying construction, timber, or hardware products (Preferred).

Sound knowledge of Somerset West, Helderberg, and surrounding Western Cape road networks.

Strong basic math capabilities for verifying quantities and managing COD payments.
