About the Role

The Cyber Defence & Reporting Engineer is a hands-on cybersecurity specialist responsible for monitoring, detecting, analysing, and reporting cyber threats across the organisation’s security environment.

You will work closely with the Security Operations Centre (SOC), endpoint security teams, and firewall engineers to investigate alerts, improve detection capabilities, and support incident response processes.

This role operates in a high-pressure environment, including critical incident response situations (P1 incidents) where fast decision-making and structured coordination are essential.


Key Responsibilities of a Cyber Defence Engineer

Security Monitoring & Threat Detection

  • Monitor security events across endpoints, networks, identity, and applications.
  • Analyse and triage security alerts from SIEM and monitoring tools.
  • Identify patterns, trends, and emerging cyber threats.

SIEM & Detection Engineering

  • Operate and optimise SIEM platforms and security tools.
  • Develop and improve detection rules, correlation logic, and use cases.
  • Build and maintain Microsoft Defender detection rules and analytics.

Incident Response & SOC Collaboration

  • Work closely with outsourced SOC teams to validate alerts.
  • Support incident investigation, containment, and escalation processes.
  • Participate in high-severity (P1) incident response and war room coordination.

Threat Hunting & Forensics Support

  • Conduct proactive threat hunting using available telemetry.
  • Support cyber forensic investigations by coordinating evidence collection.
  • Assist in timeline reconstruction and investigation documentation.

Security Automation & Process Improvement

  • Improve alert enrichment and response workflows.
  • Drive automation opportunities in incident handling.
  • Develop runbooks and playbooks with SOC teams.

Reporting & Compliance

  • Create security dashboards and executive-level reports.
  • Track key risk indicators and incident trends.
  • Provide evidence for audits and compliance requirements.
  • Conduct post-incident reviews and root cause analysis.

Minimum Requirements – Cyber Defence & Reporting Engineer

Experience:

  • 3–7 years’ experience in SOC, cyber defence, or security monitoring — essential
  • Experience in security alert analysis and incident triage — essential
  • Experience with security reporting and metrics — essential

Technical Skills:

  • SIEM platforms and security monitoring tools — essential
  • Microsoft Defender detection development — advantageous
  • Threat detection and incident response tools — essential
  • Security dashboards and reporting systems — essential

Qualifications:

  • IT or Information Security qualification (Diploma or Degree preferred)
  • Cybersecurity certifications (advantageous), such as:
