What Does a Court Interpreter Do?

Court Interpreters are essential to the administration of justice in South Africa. In this role, you will be responsible for interpreting proceedings across criminal, civil, and labour courts, translating legal documents and exhibits, and maintaining accurate court records — ensuring that all parties can fully participate in court proceedings regardless of language.

This is a high-responsibility, professionally demanding role that requires language proficiency, confidentiality, and the ability to perform accurately under pressure in a busy court environment.


Key Responsibilities of a Court Interpreter

Court Interpretation

  • Interpret proceedings in Criminal Court, Civil Court, Labour Court, and quasi-judicial proceedings.
  • Ensure accurate and impartial interpretation for all parties appearing before the court.
  • Interpret during attorney-client and prosecutor consultations as required.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality in all court and consultation matters.

Document Translation

  • Translate legal documents, exhibits, and related materials as directed by the court.
  • Ensure all translated documents are accurate, complete, and professionally presented.
  • Assist Magistrates and Prosecutors with translation-related queries as required.

Record Keeping & Administration

  • Record cases accurately in the criminal record book.
  • Draw case records on request of the Magistrate and Prosecutors.
  • Keep accurate and up-to-date records of court interpretation statistics.
  • Maintain organised filing systems and administrative records.

Support to Court Officials

  • Render administrative and language support to Magistrates, Prosecutors, and court staff.
  • Assist with the preparation of court proceedings and related documentation.
  • Communicate professionally with members of the public attending court.

Compliance & Professionalism

  • Adhere to all departmental policies, court procedures, and applicable legislation.
  • Maintain impartiality, integrity, and professional conduct at all times.
  • Participate in language assessments and professional development as required.

Communication & Interpersonal Relations

  • Communicate clearly and professionally with court officials, legal practitioners, and members of the public.
  • Handle sensitive legal matters with discretion, confidentiality, and empathy.
  • Work collaboratively with the court administration team across all court sessions.

Minimum Requirements – Court Interpreter

To be considered for a Court Interpreter position, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Educational Qualifications:

  • NQF Level 4 / Grade 12 certificate or equivalent qualification

Language Requirements:

  • Proficiency in English and one or more indigenous languages
  • Bethlehem (Free State): IsiZulu, Sesotho, English, and Afrikaans
  • Mmabatho (North West): Setswana, Afrikaans, IsiZulu or IsiXhosa or English
  • Western Cape posts: English proficiency and relevant regional languages
