Purpose of the Role
The Courier is responsible for the safe and efficient transport of medical specimens, laboratory reports, and parcels — by vehicle or motorbike — between Ampath’s laboratories and the healthcare communities of the Worcester region. Key Responsibilities – Courier
Medical Specimen & Report Transport
- Safely collect and deliver medical specimens, laboratory reports, and parcels across assigned Worcester and surrounding routes — following all Ampath collection and delivery protocols without exception.
- Maintain the integrity of all medical specimens throughout transport — applying correct handling, temperature awareness, and packaging standards to preserve sample validity for accurate diagnostic analysis.
- Deliver results and reports to the correct clinicians, practices, hospitals, and care facilities promptly and accurately — no delivery late, misdirected, or incomplete.
Route Management & Punctuality
- Navigate assigned routes across Worcester and the Cape Winelands efficiently and safely — planning for road conditions and optimising delivery sequences to meet all collection and delivery windows.
- Adapt proactively to route changes, urgent collections, and additional dispatch instructions — maintaining punctuality and service continuity throughout every shift.
Client Relationship & Brand Representation
- Represent Ampath professionally and courteously in every client interaction — at doctors’ rooms, clinics, hospitals, and collection points across the route.
- Build reliable, trust-based relationships with healthcare professionals on the regular route — becoming a recognisable, dependable face of Ampath in the Worcester community.
Specimen Handling & Care
- Handle all specimens, reports, and parcels with meticulous attention — recognising that each delivery is part of a patient’s diagnostic journey and that care and accuracy at every step support the quality of the result.
- Report any specimen integrity concerns, delivery issues, or client feedback to the relevant Ampath team member immediately.
Vehicle Safety & Maintenance
- Operate Ampath’s vehicle or motorbike safely and responsibly — complying with all South African road traffic legislation at all times.
- Maintain the assigned vehicle’s cleanliness and report any defects or maintenance needs to the supervisor promptly.
Minimum Requirements – Courier
- Grade 12 (Matric) — essential
- Valid South African Code B Driver’s Licence — essential
