What Does a Government Cleaner Do?

Government Cleaners are essential to maintaining safe, hygienic, and professional working environments across departmental buildings. In this role, you will be responsible for cleaning offices, ablution facilities, public areas, corridors, lifts, and entrances — ensuring that all areas are kept to the highest standard of cleanliness at all times in line with departmental cleaning procedures and OHS regulations.

This is a physically active, service-driven role that requires familiarity with cleaning procedures, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining a clean and safe environment for staff and members of the public.


Key Responsibilities of a Cleaner

Office & Furniture Cleaning

  • Dust and polish office furniture regularly to maintain a neat and professional environment.
  • Clean blinds, glass doors, and interior surfaces throughout the building.
  • Remove refuse from office areas and public spaces and dispose of waste correctly.
  • Empty, wash, and replace bin liners in all dustbins and waste bins.

Floor Care

  • Sweep and mop floors throughout the building including offices, corridors, stairs, and public areas.
  • Clean and maintain all entrances, lift lobbies, and lifts to a high standard.
  • Remove refuse and debris from all public areas, staircases, and walkways.

Ablution & Hygiene Facilities

  • Clean mirrors, wall tiles, and all surfaces in toilet and ablution facilities.
  • Sweep and mop toilet floors and maintain hygiene standards at all times.
  • Replace toilet paper, hand towels, and refill hand wash liquid soaps as required.
  • Empty and wash waste bins in all ablution facilities regularly throughout the day.

Reception & Common Areas

  • Clean the reception area, all building entrances, corridors, stairs, and lift lobbies.
  • Ensure all public-facing areas are presentable and maintained throughout the working day.
  • Remove refuse and litter from all common areas and dispose of waste in accordance with departmental policy.

Equipment & Reporting

  • Report broken cleaning machines and equipment to the supervisor promptly.
  • Ensure all cleaning equipment and materials are used correctly and stored safely after use.
  • Apply knowledge of OHS regulations in all cleaning activities to ensure a safe environment.

General Cleaning Support

  • Provide general cleaning support to the facilities team as directed by the supervisor.
  • Maintain cleaning supplies and notify the supervisor when stocks need to be replenished.
  • Carry out any additional cleaning duties as required by the department.

Minimum Requirements – Cleaner

To be considered for this Cleaner position, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Educational Qualifications:

  • ABET Level 4 certificate or equivalent qualification

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Basic knowledge of facilities management
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations
  • Familiar with standard cleaning procedures and products

Skills & Competencies:

  • Good verbal communication skills
  • Basic writing skills
  • Good interpersonal skills and professional conduct
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet daily cleaning schedules

Legal Requirements:

  • Valid South African ID Document
