About the Role

The Cashier is accountable for supporting customer service at the point of sale while ensuring that every transaction is processed accurately and efficiently. The role focuses on recording customer transactions on the Dis-Chem operating system in accordance with company policies and procedures, with zero tolerance for inaccuracies and fraud risk.

The Cashier must maintain a professional and welcoming presence, assist customers with queries, and ensure that all payments, refunds, exchanges, and loyalty programmes are handled correctly. This position requires strong numerical skills, a high level of integrity, and the ability to remain focused and calm during busy trading periods.

Cashiers work closely with Frontline Supervisors, store management, and colleagues to ensure smooth daily operations and consistent service delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Service and Professional Interaction

The successful candidate will adhere to Dis-Chem’s customer service policies and procedures at all times. This includes establishing professional and respectful relationships with customers, ensuring that each interaction reflects Dis-Chem’s commitment to service excellence.

The Cashier must manage customer complaints and compliments by reporting them to the Frontline Supervisor or store management in a timely and professional manner. Clear communication and emotional intelligence are essential to resolving issues effectively and maintaining customer satisfaction.

Transaction Processing and Till Operations

The Cashier is responsible for transacting all purchases accurately, including receiving and processing payments such as cash, bank cards, vouchers, coupons, and other accepted payment methods. This includes ensuring that all items are scanned correctly and that outgoing stock, items, and scripts are paid for before leaving the point of sale.

The role requires strict adherence to till procedures, including ensuring that all line voids and price changes are approved and signed off by a supervisor.

Cash Handling and Security

The Cashier must be responsible for managing cash flow accurately and securely. This includes ensuring that cash is placed in the drop safe according to Dis-Chem’s standard operating procedures and that all money is kept safely inside the till.

Handling daily takings confidentially is essential, and discussions regarding cash must only take place with authorised management. The Cashier must be alert at all times, recognise suspicious behaviour, and report any concerns immediately to management in line with security policies.

Loyalty Programmes and Rewards Processing

The role includes processing all loyalty cards, including those of Dis-Chem’s accelerator partners such as Discovery Health Care, Medihelp Lifestage, Momentum Multiply, Legacy Lifestyle, ABSA Rewards, and eBucks.

Accurate processing of loyalty transactions is essential to maintain customer trust and ensure correct reward allocation.

Sales Awareness and Promotions

The Cashier must be aware of current sales, promotions, and store campaigns to support customer queries and ensure accurate pricing at the point of sale. Maintaining awareness of promotional activity helps enhance the customer experience and supports store performance targets.

Exchanges, Returns, and Queries

The role includes exchanging merchandise and accepting returned goods when authorised to do so. The Cashier must ensure that all returns and exchanges are processed in line with company policies and that customer queries regarding store merchandise are addressed professionally and accurately.

Compliance with Policies and Procedures

The Cashier must adhere to all Dis-Chem security policies, standard operating procedures, and communication principles, including the Dis-Chem 5-star communication standards.

Ensuring that personal login codes and passwords are used exclusively by the individual, kept secure, and changed regularly is a critical responsibility to maintain system integrity.

Operational Efficiency and Performance Standards

The role requires adherence to customer turnover hourly rate targets while maintaining accuracy and service quality. Balancing speed with precision is essential in ensuring efficient operations without compromising standards.

Minimum Requirements

Essential

  • Grade 12 / Matric

  • Minimum 6 months’ experience in cashier or till operations

  • Computer literacy with MS Office

  • Sound numerical skills

  • Strong command of the English language

  • Basic customer service skills

  • Willing and able to work retail hours
